Baku will host COP29 this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">COP WATCH-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>COP28 assembles technical group: <\/strong>The COP28 presidency has announced the launch of a Technical Cooperation Collaborative (TCC) group aimed at helping countries deliver the objectives of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cop28.com\/en\/food-and-agriculture\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">COP28 Declaration on Food and Agriculture<\/a>, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cop28.com\/en\/news\/2024\/06\/COP28-Presidency-launches-technical-group\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. The TCC was founded by several partners including Italy, the United States, the United Kingdom, and the World Bank at the Bonn Climate Change Conference, which kicked off yesterday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There\u2019s a lot riding on the Bonn conference: <\/strong>Countries \u201ccannot afford to stumble\u201d during current talks in Bonn in order to make \u201cserious progress on finance,\u201d head of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change Simon Stiell said in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/news\/simon-stiell-opening-speech-we-can-t-afford-rest-stops-detours-or-stumbles-at-this-halfway-point-in\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">speech<\/a>. Main topics of discussion will include climate finance, action and adaptation plans, submission of transparency reports, and how to phase out fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Will history repeat itself? <\/strong>Last year\u2019s conference ended with diplomats making progress on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/08471c12-5188-48b4-8e1d-53099149d52e\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">setting an agenda<\/a>, but failing to take robust climate action. The outcome of the talks, which saw countries only able to agree on an agenda on the second-to-last day, saw a notable omission of the \u201cmitigation work program,\u201d which would have opened talks on how to accelerate emission cuts and raise funds to help developing countries deploy clean energy. The conclusion of the conference foreshadowed the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c9395f65-e732-45c9-b18a-a22c63736c0d\/%253cmark%253ecop28%253c%2Fmark%253e%25e2%2580%2599s-adopted-text-sees-nations-agreeing-to-transition-away-from-fossil-fuels-instead-of-phase-out\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">controversial ending<\/a> of COP28. <\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a>#1- Egypt\u2019s government is reportedly <\/strong><strong>mulling plans<\/strong><strong> to put in place a new tax on carbon emissions from petroleum products<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.asharqbusiness.com\/amp\/article\/64436\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asharq Business<\/a> reported, citing a 7-year tax policy document it has seen. The proposed tax will be based upon the \u201ccost of environmental damage\u201d \u2014 i.e, a direct tax on emissions \u2014 and not the quantity of petroleum products as done currently.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why now?<\/strong> The proposed tax comes in response to the EU\u2019s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) that is set to fully <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/dac41906-1485-42fe-b103-9d11a851945c\/today:-the-uae%25e2%2580%2599s-blue-carbon-is-spending-usd-1.5-bn-in-carbon-offsets-in-zimbabwe-%2B-the-eu-just-rolled-out-the-world%25e2%2580%2599s-first-co2-border-tax\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">go into effect<\/a> starting 2026, which could have a considerable impact on Egypt\u2019s exports \u2014 particularly from the country\u2019s notoriously energy-intensive steel, aluminum, cement, and fertilizer industries. The carbon border tax will make up the difference between the local carbon price \u2014 if there is one \u2014 and the EU\u2019s carbon price, meaning that if Egypt doesn\u2019t tax the carbon on EU-bound imports, the EU will. .<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The gov\u2019t says you shouldn\u2019t believe everything you read: <\/strong>The tax policy document for 2024-2030 circulating on social media is a months-old \u201cinitial concept\u201d that has now gone through revisions, Egyptian Finance Minister Mohamed Maait clarified in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid0291HrS7v4vceeLHza8bBYWskEXKYc8GB1Ntua2efYMRKo4J9bUyYhipdpPLN6KqX7l\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The document laying out new taxation policies is still in the works and will be opened up for community dialogue in the \u201ccoming weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>#2- Key construction on Oman\u2019s Manah 1 solar farm underway: <\/strong>Wadi Noor Solar Power Company \u2014 a consortium comprising French power utility EDF Renewables and Korea Western Power (Kowepco) \u2014 will begin installing the solar PV modules for its 500 MW Manah 1 Solar project in Oman next month, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.omanobserver.om\/article\/1154550\/business\/energy\/manah-1-solar-power-project-set-to-enter-key-construction-phase\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Oman Daily Observer<\/a> reports. The plant \u2014 under construction since September \u2014 is set to begin commercial operations by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/bf85e495-a9bc-408a-b618-6a63aa63ef0d\/today:-saudi-arabia-signs-spate-of-mining-agreements-worth-usd-20-bn\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">1Q 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The details:<\/strong> Over 1 mn panels \u2014 which are being imported from Chinese manufacturer <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/jasolar.com\/html\/en\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">JA Solar<\/a> \u2014 are currently arriving at the project site, and are expected to be installed over the next few months. The panel\u2019s supporting structures are currently being built on a 7.8 sqkm plot of land where the station will be located, consortium CEO Yahya al Rawahi told the Observer adding that the consortium aims to source at least 20% of goods and services locally during the EPC phase, including local workforce employment and subcontracting. A new 400-kilovolt grid station in Manah <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c5251960-9712-4097-8211-97857a2bb677\/green-mobility-and-infrastructure-updates-from-uae,-oman-and-saudi-arabia\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">already began operating<\/a> last month to support the solar project.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>About the tech: <\/strong>The project will use <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.solarpowerworldonline.com\/2018\/04\/what-are-bifacial-solar-modules\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">bifacial modules<\/a>, which are able to generate power from both their top and bottom faces, CEO of Wadi Noor Solar Power Company \u2014 the company developing the project \u2014 Yahya al Rawahi told the Observer. \u201cThere are 2 bin class capacities for the Manah 1 project: 585 W and 590 W modules. The PV modules will be mounted on single axis trackers to maximize power generation throughout the day,\u201d he said. The modules will also use automated single-axis trackers and cleaning robots.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong><strong>Oman\u2019s Manah 1 reached financial close earlier this year:<\/strong> The consortium said it had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/bf85e495-a9bc-408a-b618-6a63aa63ef0d\/today:-saudi-arabia-signs-spate-of-mining-agreements-worth-usd-20-bn\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reached financial close<\/a> on the Manah 1 project back in January. The project's funding will be obtained from local and foreign banks, including Korea\u2019s Export-Import Bank, Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale, and Muscat Bank, which it secured USD 301.8 mn from last month. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#3- <\/strong><strong>Existing <\/strong><strong>fossil fuel projects are sufficient to meet the growing global energy need,<\/strong> according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.science.org\/stoken\/author-tokens\/ST-1888\/full\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">new study<\/a> by the University College London and the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iisd.org\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">International Institute for Sustainable Development<\/a>. The research calls for the cessation of new projects suggesting that existing oil, gas, and coal reserves are sufficient as the global energy sector pivots towards renewable sources, aligning with the 1.5 \u00b0C target. \u201cThe study is the first peer-reviewed paper published in a scientific journal to argue that no more fossil fuel projects are needed as renewable energy sources take up the demand,\u201d according to FT.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>So what can be done? <\/strong>The researchers argue that stopping new projects is more feasible economically, politically, and legally than shutting down existing ones. While the International Energy Organization has made similar conclusions on ceasing oil production, Big Oil leaders including Aramco still believe that global oil demand <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3e08a588-1d47-454e-9cb2-a64b30187193\/today:-more-funding-for-egypt%25e2%2580%2599s-green-transition-%2B-masdar-is-reportedly-eyeing-an-indian-acquisition\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">won\u2019t peak soon<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">DANGER ZONE- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Climate-vulnerable countries face doubling debt payments since pandemic:<\/strong> Debt payments by the 50 countries most vulnerable to climate change have doubled since the coronavirus pandemic, reaching their highest levels in over 30 years, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/debtjustice.org.uk\/press-release\/climate-vulnerable-countries-debt-payments-highest-in-three-decades\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">research<\/a> by UK-based organization Debt Justice.
