Egypt has inaugurated a EUR 230 mn, 252 MW wind farm in the Gulf of Suez<\/strong>, according to a statement<\/a>. The station is located near the city of Ras Ghareb in the Gulf of Suez and Gabal El-Zeit region was developed under a Build, Own, Operate (BOO) agreement, local media<\/a> reports. <\/p>\n

REMEMBER- This has been in the works since 2020: <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s New and Renewable Energy Agency (NREA) signed an agreement<\/a> with an Italian-French-Chilean alliance led by Vestas to construct the wind project in August 2020. Vestas was awarded the tender in early 2020 after both Siemens Gamesa and Germany\u2019s Senvion retracted their bids, and began trial operations<\/a> in November 2023. The company began commercial operations<\/a> at the end of last year before handing it over to the NREA.<\/p>\n

The details: <\/strong>The wind farm has a capacity of 252 MW and cost approximately EUR 230 mn, the statement notes, which is a slight revision from the last reported capacity of 250 MW costing EUR 228 mn<\/a>. The farm has 70 3.6 MW capacity wind turbines<\/a>, with total annual generation expected to reach 1.2 TWh. The wind farm will offset around 200k tons of oil annually, reducing carbon emissions by around 500k tons per year, the statement added.<\/p>\n

All part of a bigger plan: <\/strong>Over 40k sqkm have been allocated to up to 150 GW solar energy projects and 120 GW of wind farms, the statement notes. Egypt has the potential to generate around 350 GW of renewable energy, Egypt\u2019s Minister of Electricity and Renewable Energy Mohamed Shaker said at the ribbon cutting ceremony.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
