The project \u2014 dubbed the H2 Notos project \u2014 will have the potential to boost production to 1 mn tons per year in South Tunisia in its initial phase. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Here\u2019s what we know so far: <\/strong>The hydrogen will be exported to Central Europe via the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.south2corridor.net\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">SoutH2 Corridor<\/a> pipeline which connects North Africa to Italy, Austria, and Germany, the statement notes, adding that it is expected to be operational by 2030. TE H2 and Verbund will oversee the development, financing, construction, and operation of the project, with Verbund coordinating the transport of hydrogen to Europe.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Much funding needed:<\/strong> The project would need \u201cbns of USD\u201d in investments for the initial phase, which will have a 3 GW capacity, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-05-28\/totalenergies-verbund-eye-green-hydrogen-in-tunisia-sent-by-pipeline-to-europe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> writes, citing comments made by TE H2 CEO David Corchia. He urged Europe to finance and subsidize investments that enhance energy security. The green hydrogen produced will be used to decarbonize Spain or Europe\u2019s hard-to-abate sectors including steel, fertilizers, chemicals, heavy transportation, and aviation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>About the SoutH2 Corridor: <\/strong>Europe\u2019s transmission operators each submitted a Project of Common Interest application to the European Commission for the corridor project, which aims to \u201csupply competitive renewable hydrogen to European demand clusters,\u201d its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.south2corridor.net\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">website<\/a> writes. The proposal includes utilizing more than 70% repurposed infrastructure, with new pipeline segments only where necessary. The corridor has strong political endorsement and support from companies involved in production and offtake of hydrogen along the whole corridor. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Tunisia is ramping up its interest in green energy exports to the EU: <\/strong>Italy is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/73d587de-a48f-4683-8b51-edb623b57027\/italy-backs-medlink-project-in-a-bid-to-import-renewable-energy-from-north-africa\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">planning to provide political backing<\/a> for the Medlink project in a bid to import 28 TW worth of renewable electricity from Tunisia and Algeria to Northern Italy. Italy and Tunisia are also already working on a separate EUR 1 bn electric interconnection project dubbed Elmed which Italy's Environment and Energy Security Ministry recently authorized.
