As the head of the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/icm.ucla.edu\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Institute for Carbon Management (ICM)<\/a>, Sant is steering the institute away from academic articles and focusing instead on practical solutions to slash emissions with some degree of success. Equatic is currently operating a carbon removal system at the Port of Los Angeles and is constructing the world's largest <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ce505401-64a8-468b-ba51-610d489be622\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ocean-based CO2 removal plant<\/a> in Singapore. CarbonBuilt <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/322bce44-471f-430d-89b9-0f8a86186f18\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">kicked off commercial production<\/a> for its technology last year which claims to slash emissions during the lifecycle of concrete by 70% to 100%. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But it\u2019s not all smooth sailing:<\/strong> Carbon capture technologies face challenges from activists and experts who are concerned they could delay the shift away from fossil fuels, Bloomberg explains. Carbon capture tech like Equatic's also consume significant energy \u2014 up to 2 MWh per ton of CO2 removed, enough to power an average US home for over a month.
