A small update on Egypt\u2019s mega wind project:<\/strong> The Egyptian government has inked a land access agreement with Infinity Power, Hassan Allam Utilities, and the UAE\u2019s Masdar for their planned USD 11 bn<\/a> 10 GW wind farm project in Sohag, according to a joint statement (pdf)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s next?<\/strong> The consortium will reportedly have access to over<\/a>3k<\/a>sq km<\/a>of land<\/a> in West Sohag, Al Ahram reports, allowing the group to conduct the surveys and studies needed before beginning construction. The consortium is expected to reach financial close and break ground on Egypt\u2019s largest wind energy project in 1Q 2025, Infinity Power Chairman Mohamed Mansour told Al Arabiya last December, with operations scheduled to begin in 2027.<\/p>\n

About the project:<\/strong> The wind farm \u2014 which is set to be one of the largest wind farms globally and the largest in Africa \u2014 will offset as much as 10%<\/a> of Egypt\u2019s total carbon footprint, saving the country some USD 5 bn per year by minimizing the need for natgas consumption. <\/p>\n

The wind project aims to produce 48k GWh of clean energy annually<\/a>, reducing Egypt's carbon emissions by 23.8 mn tons of CO2 each year, the statement says. Construction of the plant is set to start in 1Q 2025.<\/p>\n

It took a while: <\/strong>Masdar, Infinity Power, and Hassan Allam Utilities signed the land allocation agreement with the Egyptian government back in June 2023<\/a> \u2014 eight months after the companies signed an MoU on the sidelines of COP27.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
