Semiconductors play a pivotal role in the operation of electrolyzers used to convert water into clean hydrogen fuel using solar power.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How it works: <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Cuprous-Oxide\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Cuprous oxide<\/a>, although known for its potential as a cheap alternative to silicon, has performance limitations due to charge losses within the material. The Cambridge team tackled this issue by growing the crystals in a specific orientation, allowing electric charges to travel faster and further.
