Good morning, friends. <\/strong>It\u2019s a quiet morning as people switch back on into work mode after Eid break, but we have some movement on the solar and waste-to-energy front in Egypt and the UAE.<\/p>\n

HAPPENING TODAY- The <\/strong>Middle East Energy<\/a><\/strong> conference<\/strong> is opening its doors today in <\/strong>Dubai and will run <\/strong>through to Thursday. <\/strong>The exhibition and conference will showcase the latest research and technology in the energy sector as it brings together global energy suppliers and manufacturers. <\/p>\n

<\/a><\/strong>A SIGN OF THE TIMES, TECH LOVERS- With AI\u2019s efficiency comes higher energy <\/strong>consumption<\/strong>, Ceres Power<\/a> CTO Caroline Hangrove warned a panel<\/a> discussing the Digital Economy. Some 9 bn daily searches using AI would consume 10 TW hours of electricity annually and the AI industry is expected to spike its electricity demand 10x by 2026, a recent International Energy Agency report (pdf)<\/a> found. <\/p>\n

<\/a>EVS ARE STILL IN HOT WATER\u2026- BP\u2019s EV charging business <\/strong>BP Pulse<\/a><\/strong> has laid off over <\/strong>10% of its workforce and pulled out of several markets<\/strong>, unnamed company sources tell Reuters<\/a>. The move was driven by a slower-than-expected adoption of EV fleets globally and comes as BP shifts focus to more profitable segments of the business in an effort to quell investor concern regarding fossil fuel divestments, the newswire adds. The firm will continue to focus on markets with fast growth potential including the US, China, Germany, and Britain. France, Australia, and New Zealand are also on the cards as potential growth markets. BP aims to install 100k EV charging points globally by 2030.<\/p>\n

REMEMBER- EV sales have been slowing down: <\/strong>BYD just experienced its slowest quarterly bottomline growth in two years as EV sales momentum slowed down, leading to a 6.1% drop<\/a> in the company\u2019s Hong Kong shares. Last month, US luxury EV manufacturer Lucid Motors\u2019 shares were down 31% since the beginning of the year, and there is a belief among some pundits that US appetite for EVs \u2014 which rose to a peak during covid \u2014 has fallen off<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>\u2026 AND MINERALS, TOO- <\/strong>Mining investments are reportedly too low to achieve the global <\/strong>energy transition<\/strong>, Reuters<\/a> reports Rio Tinto<\/a> chairman Dominic Barton as saying during a panel at the Ecosperity conference in Singapore. There is an insufficient supply of critical minerals like copper, lithium, nickel, and cobalt \u2014 needed for EV battery manufacturing, solar panels, and wind turbines \u2014 and the current funding for digging new mines is USD bns below the necessary amount, Barton added. A<\/p>\n

The numbers agree:<\/strong> Investment in the mining and processing of these critical minerals must triple by 2050 to USD 331.5 bn annually to meet Paris Agreement goals, according to a study<\/a> by the Allen & Overy and the Climate Policy Initiative. Consumption of these minerals by the energy sector is expected to increase 6x by 2040, according to the International Energy Association<\/a>.<\/p>\n

DATA POINT-<\/p>\n

Thermal power made up 77.7% of the UAE\u2019s total power generation mix by the <\/strong>end of 2023<\/strong>, according to London-based data and analytics firm GlobalData<\/a>. Gas-based thermal power comprised 80.2% of the power mix in 2023. <\/p>\n

Total thermal power capacity is expected to reach 46.1 GW by 2035<\/strong>, up from 41.2 GW in 2023. Coupled with the country\u2019s substantial gas and oil reserves, the UAE is anticipated to continue relying on thermal power for its energy mix over the next 10 years, the firm said.<\/p>\n

The forum will facilitate dialogue among water sector leaders, experts, and stakeholders to address challenges and share expertise. It will feature presentations by key entities in the water industry focusing on integrated solutions, showcasing successful water projects, and promoting investment opportunities for sector development.<\/p>\n

The UAE will host <\/strong>The Electric Vehicle Innovation Summit<\/a><\/strong> from Monday, 20 May to <\/strong>Wednesday, 22 May <\/strong>in Abu Dhabi.
