The two oil companies are reportedly in the early stages of extracting lithium \u2014 a key component in EV battery production \u2014 although the type of direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology was not specified. American oil giants <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/exxon-aims-begin-lithium-production-by-2026-arkansas-source-2023-11-11\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ExxonMobil<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/dle-companies-racing-reshape-global-lithium-production-2023-06-16\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Occidental Petroleum<\/a> are also aiming to utilize new technologies to extract lithium from brine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#5- EU nations exit energy charter treaty:<\/strong> EU countries have collectively decided to withdraw from the 1998 Energy Charter Treaty (ECT) due to concerns that it undermines efforts to combat climate change, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/climate-energy\/eu-countries-exit-energy-treaty-over-climate-concerns-officials-say-2024-03-07\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported on Thursday. The final decision is now awaiting approval from the European Parliament. Italy withdrew from the ECT in 2015. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Attempts to retain members with an updated treaty:<\/strong> The EU Commission attempted to leave room for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0e9d0144-d27b-4e12-bf51-61df76c4cee9\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">member states to remain in an \u201cupdated version\u201d<\/a> of the ECT last year. Countries like Cyprus, Slovakia, and Hungary had signaled preference to remain in a modernized version of the energy treaty to remain in the accord. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#6- HD Hyundai sets up maritime nuclear energy watchdog: <\/strong>South Korea\u2019s HD Hyundai Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering revealed that it has established a London-based international regulatory body \u2014 called the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nemo.ngo\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Nuclear Energy Maritime Organization<\/a> (Nemo) \u2014 aimed at regulating and standardizing the deployment, operation and decommissioning of nuclear energy within the maritime sector, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businesskorea.co.kr\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=212587\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Business Korea<\/a> reports. Comprising 11 founding nuclear companies from seven countries, the organization will collaborate with the International Maritime Organization and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) to \u201cserve as a cornerstone to advance the era of offshore nuclear power,\u201d Nemo\u2019s inaugural chairman and IAEA\u2019s former safety division head, Mamdouh el-Shanawany said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#7- <\/strong><strong>South <\/strong><strong>Korea is set to become the first Asian country to offer carbon-linked <\/strong><strong>financial products to retail investors, <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-07\/south-korea-to-launch-asia-s-first-retail-carbon-linked-investment-product\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported on Thursday. In collaboration with Korea Exchange and local securities firms, South Korea\u2019s Environment Ministry announced that it will launch <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/e\/etn.asp\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">exchange-traded notes (ETNs)<\/a> linked to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.offsetguide.org\/understanding-carbon-offsets\/other-instruments-for-claiming-emission-reductions\/allowances\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">carbon allowances<\/a> by August this year. This comes in efforts to boost the country\u2019s emissions trading market beyond only corporate polluters and brokerage firms, allowing retail investors to gain exposure to the market and hedge against price volatility. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What are ETNs?<\/strong> ETNs are types of unsecured debt securities or bonds that track an underlying index of securities and trade on a major exchange like a stock. ETNs pay out based on the performance of an underlying index, in this case the carbon market. The financial product can increase liquidity and participation in the carbon market, which has been struggling with low prices and oversupply of permits since 2015.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Paving the way for more carbon market expansions:<\/strong> The ministry also plans to introduce <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/e\/etf.asp\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">exchange-traded funds (ETFs)<\/a> and a futures contract for carbon allowances by 2025, following the example of the European Union, which has the most developed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/climate.ec.europa.eu\/eu-action\/eu-emissions-trading-system-eu-ets\/what-eu-ets_en#a-cap-and-trade-system\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">cap-and-trade system<\/a> in the world. The ministry will also revise the rules of the carbon market to reduce the number of free allowances and raise the share of auctioned permits from 2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">COP WATCH-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>COP29 host Azerbaijan is prioritizing its green sector: <\/strong>In response to criticisms over oil producing Azerbaijan being selected to host COP29, the Central Asian country is looking to prove how it has prioritized green growth and \u201cdemonstrate how the country turned the economy to the green direction,\u201d soon-to-be COP29 president and Azerbaijan\u2019s Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Mukhtar Babayev told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/3116e340-8b59-44cd-b394-16391aa1a44a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Financial Times<\/a>. Babayez also defended the country\u2019s selection by stating that the country is \u201cvulnerable\u201d to climate change and suffers from climate impacts such as water shortages and land degradation. Azerbaijan has been upping its efforts to reel in investments in its green sector, and has successfully secured agreements and inaugurated projects in partnership <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e25453f4-e607-43aa-b55f-ffbf4d3f0688\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">with the UAE<\/a> and its <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/08ebc2d1-c075-4429-ba06-cac0c83681fc\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">renewables firm Masdar<\/a>, amongst other regional players.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ICYMI- Azerbaijan under fire for fossil fuel expansion plans: <\/strong>Azerbaijan <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4edcf315-3624-49ef-80a7-a64f825b1e4b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">plans to expand its natural gas output<\/a> by a third, to reach 49 bn cubic meters a year within nine years. It also marked the ninth in a consecutive trend of warmest months on record, as temperatures hit 1.77 \u00b0C above pre-industrial estimates. European temperatures were 3.30\u00b0C above average and global sea surface temperatures also set a new record at 21.06 \u00b0C, up from the previous record of 20.98 \u00b0C in August 2023. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A weakening El Ni\u00f1o is not enough to lower temperatures:<\/strong> El Ni\u00f1o is growing weaker but its effects are expected to continue to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/edition\/climate\/094523d5-df1e-4e40-9d2b-05e8a011b7b6\/egypt-could-be-lining-up-an-usd-1.2-bn-climate-finance-agreement\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">fuel above average temperatures<\/a> worldwide in the next few months. There is a 60% chance that the El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon will persist from March until May and an 80% chance of neutral weather patterns between April to June, according to the study.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#2- The aviation industry is \u201clikely to miss the 2050 net zero target,\u201d<\/strong> former chief executive of Amsterdam\u2019s Schiphol airport Ruud Sondag told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/69b19c61-7ea3-4b5c-80c2-c613e2969f30\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Financial Times<\/a>, due to the industry\u2019s continued expansion in airfleets \u2014 projected to increase <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oliverwyman.com\/our-expertise\/insights\/2024\/feb\/global-fleet-and-mro-market-forecast-2024-2034.html?utm_medium=referral&utm_campaign=fleet-mro-forecast-2024&utm_content=forbes-&utm_id=cmp-16005-r2f0r6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">by 28%<\/a> globally by 2034 to reach 36.4k aircrafts \u2014 at a rate faster than the commercialization of sustainable aviation fuel or other green alternatives. The industry will fail to achieve the targets stipulated in the Paris Agreement unless European governments intervene by raising taxes or imposing caps on flights, according to Sondag, who urged that \u201cwe need to do something. And if that\u2019s a standstill [in air travel growth] for the time being. [Then] Okay.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#3- EVs won\u2019t be the holy grail of green auto infrastructure: <\/strong>Despite hopes being pinned on EVs to help reduce climate pollution around the world, a global transition to using an all-EV fleet would \u201cperpetuate the worst impacts of cars and auto infrastructure,\u201d ranging from deaths to noise pollution to fossil fuel emissions, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-03-07\/evs-can-t-fix-a-global-epidemic-of-car-harm-study-finds\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported last week, citing a recent study published in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S0966692324000267\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ScienceDirect<\/a>.
