Although the materials are sourced from petrochemicals, they can be produced <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2405844023103070#:~:text=Organic%20Solar%20Cells%20(OSCs)%20have,their%20carbon%20footprint%20%5B17%5D.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">using low-temperature processing methods<\/a>, significantly reducing their carbon footprint compared to conventional silicon solar panels. A problem that had blocked the tech\u2019s commercial roll out was its inability to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.phy.cam.ac.uk\/news\/new-findings-pave-way-stable-organic-solar-cells-may-enable-cheap-and-renewable-electricity\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">maintain efficiency<\/a> for long periods of time when exposed to sunlight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How do they fare against silicon solar cells? <\/strong>A conventional silicon-based solar array reaches a power conversion efficiency of up to 20-25%. OSCs can reach around 19% under laboratory conditions, but average only between 10 to 12% in real-world contexts, researcher at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University Alexander Gillett told Clean Technica. Organic panels have historically had short operational life cycles \u2014 less than <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/organic-solar-cells#:~:text=Although%20impressive%20recent%20stability%20results,%2Dscale%20building%2Dintegrated%20applications.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">a few thousand hours<\/a> compared to silicon panels\u2019 over 25 years \u2014 thus limiting their usage to small-scale electricity generation rather than large-scale building-integrated applications.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Enter vitamin C?<\/strong>A team of researchers from the University of Southern Denmark <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acsami.3c06321\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">introduced<\/a> ascorbic acid \u2014 vitamin C \u2014 into OSC systems as a photostabilizer, noting incorporation of the acid strongly suppressed the photocatalytic effect that causes photodegradation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>New OSC designs are also helping increase efficiency: <\/strong>A shell-shaped OSC surface instead of a conventional flat exterior for the active layer designed by Turkey\u2019s Abdullah G\u00fcl University is enabling panels to absorb energy from multiple angles, yielding a 66% increase in light absorption.
