The researchers aimed to address the challenge of finding space to store hydrogen as demand for the green fuel grows. A potential solution is underground storage in sedimentary formations, such as <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/shale-gas\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">shale gas reservoirs<\/a>. The sedimentary rock has a high adsorption rate and is safe for hydrogen storage, but estimating the amount of hydrogen that can be adsorbed in shale is a complex and time-consuming task.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;font-family:\" arial\";line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"=\"\"><strong>What they did: <\/strong>The researchers used <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/scikit-learn.org\/stable\/auto_examples\/ensemble\/plot_gradient_boosting_regression.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">gradient boosting regression<\/a>, a machine learning technique, to create a data-driven model that can predict hydrogen adsorption in kerogen \u2014 the organic material in shale \u2014 based on various parameters like pressure, temperature, and kerogen density.
