Good morning, ladies and gents. <\/strong>It\u2019s a much quieter morning, but we have a pile of small updates on both existing and new projects from around the region. But first, some very alarming and sad news from the UNEP\u2026<\/p>\n

<\/a>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Warning bells for <\/strong>migratory species: <\/strong>Almost half of the world\u2019s migratory species are in decline with one in five under threat of extinction due to global warming and human encroachment, according to a landmark UNEP State of the World\u2019s Migratory Species<\/a> report. 44% of the 1.18k species covered under the UN\u2019s Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS) \u2014 including whales, sharks, sea turtles and songbirds \u2014 have seen their populations dwindle since CMS came into force in 1979, and up to 22% could be wiped out due to habitat loss, illegal hunting, overfishing, pollution, and climate change.<\/p>\n

REMEMBER-<\/strong>196 countries<\/a> signed the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, committing to protect 30% of the planet\u2019s oceans and lands by 2030 in a landmark agreement back in 2022 due to global warming\u2019s impact on at least 10.96k species<\/a>.<\/p>\n

<\/a>#1- Neom is getting a new solar project:<\/strong>Enowa<\/a> \u2014 a subsidiary of KSA\u2019s Neom \u2014 will receive bids from Engineering, Procurement and Contracting (EPC) companies for its 800 MW Shiqri solar project, MEED<\/a> reports. The deadline for the project \u2014 located in Saudi Arabia\u2019s Tabuk region \u2014 was slated for early February before being delayed to 3 March. At least four companies have already been invited to bid, according to unnamed sources close to the project. <\/p>\n

<\/a>#2- Bahrain floats turnkey tender for solar project in Al <\/strong>Dur<\/strong>:<\/strong> Bahrain\u2019s Electricity and Water Authority (EWA) issued a turnkey tender for solar power farms with a combined target power capacity between 90-100 MW in the Southern Governorate\u2019s Al Dur, EWA said during a board meeting<\/a>. The selected developer will be tasked with the design, engineering and construction of the project as well as an accompanying transmission line to the national grid. <\/p>\n

The criteria:<\/strong> EWA is targeting solar companies that have generated no less than USD 100 mn in gross revenues over the past three FYs. Interested developers have until 21 March, 2024 to purchase the tender, with plans to close submissions on 3 April, 2024. The bid will be valid for 180 days, with an 18 month contract duration from the tender\u2019s award.<\/p>\n

#3- <\/strong>Egypt<\/strong> launches GHG QC for exports: <\/strong>Egypt\u2019s Export and Import Control Authority has set up a lab to measure carbon emissions from the biodegradation of various products in a bid to boost exports, Amwal Al Ghad<\/a> reports. The lab\u2019s launch was revealed during a symposium organized to discuss the impacts of the European Union\u2019s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and ways to mitigate the impact on Egyptian exports to the EU, particularly in the fertilizer and hydrogen sectors.<\/p>\n

REMEMBER- The world\u2019s first carbon border tax comes in effect in 2026: <\/strong>The EU launched the first phase of the world\u2019s first carbon border tax<\/a> in October, requiring importers to report emissions from products sold in Europe, or risk fines starting from 2026 with a focus on steel, cement, aluminum, electricity, fertilizers, and hydrogen.<\/p>\n

#4- UK geotechnical firm <\/strong>Eden GeoPower<\/a><\/strong> received a grant from the US Department of <\/strong>Energy to <\/strong>conduct studies<\/strong> on Oman\u2019s geologic hydrogen potential,<\/strong> the Oman Observer<\/a> reports. The firm will study ways to increase geological hydrogen production by applying its own electric reservoir simulation techniques, with tests conducted on peridotite rock samples from Oman\u2019s Semail Ophiolite geological formation. The amount of funding was not specified. <\/p>\n

About Eden\u2019s tech:<\/strong> Eden GeoPower has developed patented Electrical Reservoir Stimulation (ERS)<\/a> technology \u2014 which has a lower carbon footprint than hydraulic fracturing \u2014 in order to speed up the naturally occurring process of geologic hydrogen \u2014 produced when water interacts with iron-rich rocks like peridotite, Oman Observer writes. The company\u2019s aim is to increase the output of geological hydrogen to levels suitable for commercial use, up from the current 2 to 4 kg of hydrogen per cubic meter of rock produced through drilling. <\/p>\n

REMEMBER-<\/strong> Oman\u2019s Energy and Minerals Ministry signed two MoUs with Eden GeoPower and Earth Sciences Consultancy Centre to facilitate scientific discussions on conducting preliminary studies<\/a> on exploring geological white hydrogen and identifying sites for conducting experimental research in September 2023. <\/p>\n

DANGER ZONE- <\/p>\n<\/p>\n

<\/a>There have been over 1.25k huge methane leaks from landfills globally between <\/strong>January 2019 and June 2023<\/strong>, new satellite analysis by The Guardian<\/a> in partnership with Kayrros reveals. Pakistan, India and Bangladesh lead the list of methane emitters, and were followed by Spain and Argentina where waste management systems were expected to avert leaks. Methane is the second most abundant<\/a> anthropogenic greenhouse gas after CO2, and contributes a third of global heating driving the climate crisis. 150 nations have signed up<\/a> for the Global Methane Pledge \u2014 first proposed in 2021 to push down methane volumes by at least 30% by 2030.<\/p>\n
