The team \u2014 who published their <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/1\/2109.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">findings (pdf)<\/a> in Nature Communications Journal \u2014 is currently designing a simplified device to produce the film at an industrial scale.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why does it matter?<\/strong> The researchers demonstrated that the film can reduce the temperature by 5 \u00b0C under a partly cloudy sky, potentially saving up to 3.3% of the total energy consumption for cooling if used on a commercial scale. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How does it work?<\/strong> The film is made from sodium <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/polyacrylate\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">polyacrylate<\/a>, a material commonly used in diapers, hair gels, and soaps due to its ability to absorb and retain water. Kaust\u2019s super-absorbent polymer can collect moisture from the air at night and release it during the day for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oxy-com.com\/what-is-evaporative-cooling\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">evaporative cooling<\/a>, lowering the temperature by using the evaporated water to cool hot air. The material also has high thermal emissivity and reflectivity properties to allow for <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/acsaom.3c00212\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">radiative cooling<\/a> \u2014 a process that involves the emission of infrared thermal radiation from a surface to its surroundings (including the atmosphere and outer space), to cool down its temperature. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Lots of potential energy applications ahead: <\/strong>The team is now working on scaling up the production and exploring applications for the film, such as cooling solar panels, light-emitting diodes (semiconductors that act as a one-way switch for current), and batteries.
