The researchers used a new method to synthesize the material without using hazardous chemicals or organic solvents. The sensing material can be produced in large quantities at room temperature, making the process both energy and cost efficient.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why does this matter? <\/strong>Accurately sensing and measuring <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0360319923019468\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">hydrogen concentrations<\/a> is important for the safe use of hydrogen fuel \u2014 especially as hydrogen is much lighter than air allowing for a rapid dispersal of the fuel in case of a leak \u2014 and therefore will be a crucial element in the energy transition, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.openaccessgovernment.org\/hydrogen-safety-energy-transition-decarbonisation-green-hydrogen\/155443\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Open Access News<\/a> writes. While hydrogen is a non-toxic fuel, it is highly flammable and can be dangerous, especially if a continued leak leads to the concentration of the gas. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Safety concerns: <\/strong>Given that the International Energy Agency has identified that the world will need to produce 520MT of clean hydrogen annually by 2050 to reach net zero, safety will be a major challenge for hydrogen proponents, especially as hydrogen\u2019s properties make it difficult to detect using traditional infrared sensors, Open Access News added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How did they do it? <\/strong>The material is made of hollow <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/chemistry\/nanocage\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">nanocages<\/a> of palladium and a mixture of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lenntech.com\/periodic\/elements\/pd.htm\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">palladium<\/a> and platinum, which have a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/10.1021\/cr100449n\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">core-shell nanostructure<\/a> and have physical and chemical properties for catalytic reactions and hydrogen absorption.
