The fee \u2014 mandated by Congress in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3907e1bd-299f-46ad-8f42-7d0fead9dcc7\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Inflation Reduction Act<\/a> last year \u2014 will start at USD 900 per metric ton this year and increase to USD 1.5k by 2026. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) said the fee would incentivize the industry to curb methane leaks and venting.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The fee wasn't very well received:<\/strong> The oil and gas industry has criticized the proposal, saying it would undermine America's energy advantage and stifle innovation, according to Bloomberg. The American Petroleum Institute (API) said it supports smart federal methane regulation, but that the fee would create an \u201cincoherent\u201d and \u201cconfusing\u201d regulatory regime.
