THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>We unpack all the major themes from COP28\u2019s final text and a bit further west, Morocco\u2019s renewable energy agency Masen prequalified eight consortiums for the development the 400 MW third phase of the 1.6 GW Noor Midelt solar complex in the Atlas Mountains.<\/p>\n

<\/a>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Tesla\u2019s mass recall: <\/strong>Tesla is recalling nearly all of the EVs it sold in the US since 2015 \u2014 over 2 mn cars \u2014 to update its autopilot software after a two-year probe by US safety regulators. The US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the new update, which comes after an extensive investigation into some 1k car crashes which occurred when the autosteer tech was in use, will install new warnings and alerts to drivers and restrict areas where basic versions of autopilot can operate.<\/p>\n

<\/a><\/strong>WATCH <\/strong>THIS SPACE- World Bank boosts MENA's climate finance with <\/strong>USD 10 bn<\/strong>: <\/strong>The World Bank is set to increase climate finance for the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to USD 10 bn by 2025, the World Bank's Regional Director for Sustainable Development Meskerem Brhane told Wam<\/a>. Adopting green growth strategies can boost the region\u2019s GDP to USD 13 tn by 2050, she added. The World Bank announced last week that it was increasing the climate finance target to USD 40 bn by 2025<\/a>, which includes the MENA initiative.<\/p>\n

<\/a>DANGER ZONE- 25% of the world\u2019s freshwater fish face extinction: <\/strong>Climate change and overfishing\u2019s growing impact has put nearly a quarter freshwater fish species at risk of extinction, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN)<\/a> red list assessment. At least 17% are affected by climate related issues including decreasing water levels, rising sea levels, and shifting seasons, while the crisis is worsened by pollution, dams and water extraction, overfishing, invasive species, and disease. Freshwater fish make up more than half of the world\u2019s known fish species, despite freshwater making up only 1% of aquatic habitat.<\/p>\n

Salmon and turtles are at risk of endangerment: <\/strong>The Atlantic salmon \u2014 which was classified as being of least concern \u2014 now holds a \u201cnear threatened\u201d status with the global population decreasing by 23% between 2006 and 2020. Green turtles in the South and East Pacific Oceans are also now endangered as a result of incidental bycatches during fishing operations, and warming temperatures affecting their nesting sites. <\/p>\n
