The plant \u2014 the largest of its kind in Southeast Asia and the third largest globally \u2014 will power 50k homes and displace 214k tons of CO2 emissions, according to the statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The details:<\/strong> The plant was developed by both Masdar and PLN at an investment cost of IDR 1.7 tn (USD 108.7 mn), <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sustainability\/indonesia-president-inaugurates-108-million-floating-solar-plant-2023-11-09\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported on Thursday. Masdar first <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/masdar.ae\/en\/renewables\/our-projects\/cirata-floating-photovoltaic-fpv-plant\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed the power purchase agreement<\/a> with PLN back in 2020, marking the company\u2019s first entrance into the FPV market. The plant occupies 4% of the surface of the Cirata reservoir, which is 108 kms southeast of Indonesia\u2019s capital Jakarta.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>There\u2019s more to come:<\/strong> Masdar <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/stories\/2023\/09\/27\/masdar-to-develop-a-500-mw-floating-solar-park-in-indonesia-102737\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an agreement<\/a> with PLN in September to expand the Cirata plant with an additional 500 MW capacity of floating solar. The new agreement came after Indonesia issued regulations allocating up to 20% of water coverage for renewable energy operations, the company noted at the time. Masdar did not reveal the expected investment ticket for the upcoming phase yet, but the first stage is estimated to have a USD 145 mn price tag.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why floating solar is a good move: <\/strong>Installing offshore solar panels would <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/598ff3aa-23ae-4b39-aecd-32eb6ab2f83e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">resolve the many challenges<\/a> faced in regions worldwide in terms of available land and adequate space that doesn\u2019t require deforestation. Adding solar systems on existing reservoirs could allow more than 6k cities around the world to develop self-sufficient power systems, a paper published in Nature journal earlier this year found.
