This comes on the back of criticism from scientists and environmentalists over the country's previous support for the practice.<\/p>\n<p><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>The UN\u2019s International Seabed Authority said it would <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b7cdbbc9-c813-406f-9241-cc0ff828a1c2\">begin accepting permit applications<\/a> from corporations looking to launch deep-sea mining projects last July following two weeks of negotiations on standards and requirements of the new practice. A notable sticking point in the decision is the lack of a standard mining code that would guide ISA in its application reviewing process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why this matters:<\/strong> The growing industry aims to extract critical minerals essential to EV battery production including cobalt, copper, nickel, and manganese. However, scientists say it comes at the expense of a substantial impact on the environment including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.biologicaldiversity.org\/campaigns\/deep-sea_mining\/pdfs\/Deep-seaMiningFAQ.pdf\">destruction of natural habitats<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c8b18f3e-350b-469c-aa60-1687b43643a6\">the USD 5.5 bn tuna industry<\/a>, in addition to creating sediment plumes that disrupt aquatic life and the ocean\u2019s ability to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/d41586-023-02290-5#:~:text=Washburn%20says%20that%20deep%2Dsea,humans'%2520greenhouse%252Dgas%2520emissions.\">capture and sequester CO2<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER STORIES WORTH KNOWING ABOUT THIS MORNING-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>France is the EU\u2019s top \u201ccarbon bomb\u201d supporter:<\/strong> French banking groups have shelled out USD 154 bn since the 2015 Paris Agreement toward financing the world\u2019s 425 largest fossil fuel extraction projects \u2014 also known as carbon bombs \u2014 with the country's top banking groups BNP Paribas, BPCE Group, Cr\u00e9dit Agricole, and Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 G\u00e9n\u00e9rale investing some USD 17.8 bn in big oil last year alone.
