The global cement production sector <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cement-industry-co2-emissions-climate-change-brimstone\/\">accounts for 8%<\/a> of the world\u2019s total annual carbon emissions, with 60% of its carbon footprint attributable to limestone usage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brimstone.com\/technology\">Brimstone<\/a> notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Brimstone\u2019s approach \u2014 one carbon-capturing rock to rule them all: <\/strong>Portland cement \u2014 the world\u2019s most commonly used type of concrete material \u2014 is produced using a mix of limestones and minerals which generate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2076-3417\/10\/1\/339#:~:text=Carbon%20dioxide%20emissions%20per%20ton,kg%20per%20ton%20of%20cement.\">825\u2013890 kg of CO2 per ton<\/a> when heated. Brimstone uses calcium silicate \u2014 which is more abundant than limestone \u2014 and absorbs carbon from the atmosphere, rendering it carbon-negative. The company\u2019s patented construction materials <a href=\"https:\/\/cementproducts.com\/2023\/07\/18\/brimstone-cement-obtains-astm-c150-certification\/\">received certification<\/a> last July for being as \u201cchemically and physically identical\u201d as Portland.<\/p>\n<p><strong>They already have backing:<\/strong> Bill Gates-backed investment firm Breakthrough Energy Ventures, which is financing the firm alongside Amazon\u2019s Climate Pledge Fund, says Brimstone\u2019s tech presents a \u201cmulti tn USD\u201d offer to decarbonize the cement sector given the industry\u2019s infrastructure readiness to adopt the technology.
