Membrane desalination is prone to fouling, and is the \u201cmajor culprit to elevated operating costs,\u201d due to the deterioration of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/engineering\/permeate-flux\">permeate flux<\/a> \u2014 the liquid flowing through desal membranes, increasing pressure and resulting in frequent, costly chemical cleaning, which shortens membranes\u2019 lifespans.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The new tech:<\/strong> The NYU Abu Dhabi team has developed a hybrid membrane by utilizing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S2590183422000102#:~:text=Stimuli%2Dresponsive%20materials%20(SRM),molecular%20assembly%2C%20or%20mechanical%20properties.\">stimuli-responsive materials<\/a> \u2014 substances that react to the presence of or changes in external stimuli, such as light, temperature, and electricity \u2014 and thermo salient organic crystals embedded in polymers to enable controlled membrane deformation through pressurized self-modulation of pore sizes to minimize salt leakages in response to changes in temperature. \u201cThe crystals on the surface of the membrane respond to short-term increase in temperature, which activates the membrane to effectively remove the deposited contaminants from its surface,\u201d the university notes. NYU concluded a study noting that the process increased the flow of desalinated water by more than 43% compared to conventional osmotic distillation operations, and significantly extended the membrane\u2019s operational lifecycle.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why does this matter for the region? <\/strong>The MENA region is the most water-scarce region in the world, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prb.org\/resources\/finding-the-balance-population-and-water-scarcity-in-the-middle-east-and-north-africa\/\">Public Reference Bureau<\/a>. Some 6.3% of the global population lives in the region, but MENA only has 1.4% of the world\u2019s renewable freshwater sources. As global warming exacerbates desertification globally, the MENA region is <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e94aa1a0-7199-4551-b42a-68e24285b9db\">upping<\/a> its desalination projects and is looking to conserve water to withstand the effects of climate change. Seawater desalination projects currently provide more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/utilities\/mena-desal-projects-investments-to-hit-43bln-by-year-end-kyy1c6o7#:~:text=Seawater%20desalination%20now%20contributes%20to,Mena%20Desalination%20Market%20report%20by\">90%<\/a> of all daily water requirements in the GCC region. The GCC region produces approximately 40% of the total desalinated water in the world, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.venturesonsite.com\/construction-report\/217-mena-desalination-market---feb-2019?d=success&formid=request_free_demo\">MENA Desalination Market report<\/a> by Ventures Onsite.
