THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- <\/strong>Abu Dhabi-based asset management firm Offset8 Capital plans to raise at least USD 250 mn for a \u201cfirst of its kind\u201d carbon investment fund in MENA. It\u2019s aiming to secure the initial capital raise for the close-ended fund in 3Q 2023, subject to regulatory approval.<\/p>\n

THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- Typhoon madness in the <\/strong>Philippines: <\/strong>At least two people were killed and thousands displaced as Typhoon Doksuri pounded the northern Philippines. The arrival of the super typhoon caused heavy rains, landslides, and power cuts as it intensified in strength. Over 180k people in the country have been impacted by the typhoon, according to the Office of Civil Defense, with dozens of towns facing blackouts. The typhoon, which officials have warned of as the worst storm in a decade, is expected to make its way near Taiwan before making a landfall in China on Friday.<\/p>\n

Climate change isn\u2019t helping: <\/strong>The Philippines is one of the most disaster-prone countries<\/a> in the world, susceptible to a world record of typhoons every year. Climate change is causing typhoons to grow stronger and deadlier<\/a> due to higher sea surface temperatures and subsurface temperature, which remove the natural barrier on typhoon strength created when cold water up wells from below the ocean\u2019s surface. These stronger typhoons carry more moisture, move faster, and will be aggravated by sea level rise \u2014 one of the most certain consequences of climate change.<\/p>\n

<\/a> WATCH THIS SPACE #1- A new green hydrogen company in Egypt? <\/strong>The board of directors of Egypt\u2019s state-owned Misr Fertilizers Production Company (Mopco) have approved setting up a green hydrogen production company with the Egyptian Petrochemicals Holding Company (Echem) and Norway\u2019s Scatec, according to an EGX disclosure (pdf)<\/a>. The hydrogen produced by the company will be used to power green ammonia plants, the statement said. Mopco, Echem, and Scatec\u2019s shares in the newly established firm are yet to be determined.<\/p>\n

REMEMBER-<\/strong> In May, Scatec signed a joint development agreement<\/a> for its USD 5.5 bn green<\/a>ammonia plant<\/a> in Ain Sokhna with Echem and Mopco. Scatec began commissioning<\/a> the first phase of its 100 MW green hydrogen plant<\/a> in Egypt\u2019s Ain Sokhna with SFE, OCI-Adnoc joint venture Fertiglobe, and Orascom Construction in November.<\/p>\n

WATCH THIS SPACE #2- These heatwaves won\u2019t taper off soon: <\/strong>Extreme heat is likely to continue into August in some parts of the Mediterranean, according to a World Meteorological Organization (WMO) statement<\/a>. The Mediterranean Sea\u2019s surface temperatures will remain exceptionally high in coming weeks \u2014 exceeding 30\u00b0C in some parts \u2014 and stay over 4\u00b0C above average in large parts of the western Mediterranean, the statement notes. Tunisia, Algeria, France, Greece, Italy and Spain have reported new maximum daytime and overnight station temperature records. On June 23, Tunisia and Algeria recorded the highest maximum temperatures on record, reaching 49.0\u00b0C and 48.7\u00b0C, respectively.<\/p>\n
