The heating process in the global cement manufacturing industry conventionally relies on carbon-intensive energy sources, accounting for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cement-industry-co2-emissions-climate-change-brimstone\/#:~:text=But%20the%20cement%20industry%20is,after%20the%20U.S.%20and%20China.\">some 8%<\/a> of the world\u2019s total carbon emissions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Enter electrolyzers: <\/strong>Sublime\u2019s technology substitutes the industry's traditional fossil-fuel-intensive <a href=\"https:\/\/feeco.com\/what-is-calcination\/\">thermal calcination<\/a> process with an electrochemical process relying on electrolyzers to produce cement from a number of calcium sources at room temperature, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businesswire.com\/news\/home\/20230117005464\/en\/Sublime-Systems-Secures-40-Million-Series-A-to-Electrify-and-Scale-Decarbonized-Cement-Production\">Business Wire<\/a>. Sublime\u2019s process avoids both the use of fossil fuels and the release of CO2 from limestone.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Decarbonized cement is more cost-effective than carbon capture and storage: <\/strong>Instead of investing in carbon capture and storage projects, cement producers should aim to produce net zero products in a bid to make green cement cost-competitive, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/engine.xyz\/\">The Engine<\/a>\u2019s CEO Katie Rae, which has invested in Sublime. \u201cProducing decarbonized cement directly, rather than doing carbon capture, drives both energy efficiency and eventual cost parity,\u201d Rae told CNBC. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.scg.com\/landing\/index_en.html\">Siam Cement Group<\/a> (SCG) is backing Sublime System because its cement production method avoids costly and complicated carbon storage incorporation, venture investor at SCG Timothy McCaffery told CNBC.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Interest in decarbonizing the construction sector is picking up regionally:<\/strong> Saudi Arabia\u2019s investment firm Shurfah Holding Company and France\u2019s Hoffman Green Cement <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/97f1b7ac-95b5-452f-bac5-2077918cd785\">signed<\/a> a preliminary agreement earlier this month to design and produce low-carbon cement.
