Alberta declared a state of emergency earlier this week on Saturday, shutting production of at least 185k barrels of oil equivalent per day \u2014 about 2% of Canada\u2019s total output \u2014 and displaced nearly 30k residents. Egypt\u2019s government has identified a financing gap of some USD 154 bn in investment towards carbon emission reduction projects and USD 95 bn in climate adaptation projects until 2050, Chairman of the Egyptian Stock Exchange Ramy El Dokani <a href=\"https:\/\/www.egx.com.eg\/ar\/NewsDetails.aspx?NewsID=237581\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>BACKGROUND-<\/strong> Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly and Regional Vice President of the World Bank Group for Middle East and North Africa Region Farid Belhaj kicked off the conference for the launch of the World Bank-Egypt framework, which will see the Bank lend Egypt <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d2993aac-8f15-4ae3-9407-02c899e1b390\">USD 7 bn<\/a> over the next five years to support climate action and private sector expansion, among other objectives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt is updating 2030 sustainable development goals soon:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s Planning Minister Hala El Said told World Bank representatives that Egypt\u2019s government is updating its 2030 Vision to include emerging challenges such as population growth, climate change, and water scarcity, while also taking into account regional geopolitical changes, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/EgyptianCabinet\/posts\/pfbid02P6cobJ5T5UbWaG6PuRBA2PDpuL25sw4uH3gp1qspUbyQv38Spf6MEVENDemptkQRl\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO- Green bonds with the help of IFC? <\/strong>The International Finance Corporation (IFC) is considering participating in a green bond issuance in Egypt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.masrawy.com\/news\/news-banking\/details\/2023\/5\/7\/2409865\/-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AA%D9%85%D9%88%D9%8A%D9%84-%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A9-%D8%AA%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B3-%D8%A7%D9%84%D9%85%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%B1%D9%83%D8%A9-%D9%81%D9%8A-%D8%A5%D8%B5%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%B3%D9%86%D8%AF%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AE%D8%B6%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D8%A8%D9%85%D8%B5%D8%B1-%D9%88%D8%A5%D9%86%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D9%85%D8%AF%D8%B1%D8%B3%D8%A9\">Masrawy<\/a> quotes IFC\u2019s Regional Director for North Africa Cheick-Oumar Sylla as saying at the launch event. The IFC has invested in the Commercial International Bank\u2019s landmark issuance of Egypt's <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/egypt\/en\/news\/story\/ea5e3510-53bf-4f7b-b5ed-f3ae5b19eb31\">first private sector green bond in 2021<\/a>, Sylla said, without providing further details about the bond issuances it is considering.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- A global renewables goal could be COP28\u2019s hot topic: <\/strong>The EU could push for a global target for renewables during COP28 in November amid an expected pushback against phasing out of fossil fuels, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-08\/eu-rethinks-push-to-phase-out-fossil-fuels-at-cop28-climate-talks?srnd=premium-middle-east&leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. European officials are expecting resistance to language calling for emissions cuts, as was the case at COP27, when the EU and allies failed to secure commitments to phase out fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Germany can meet only 30% of its own green hydrogen <\/strong><strong>quota and will need to source the remaining 70% from elsewhere<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/germany-will-have-import-70-green-hydrogen-econ-minister-2023-05-08\/#:~:text=Germany%20will%20have%20to%20import%2070%25%20of%20green%20hydrogen%20%2D%20econ%20minister,-Reuters&text=Berlin%2C%20May%208%20(Reuters),said%20on%20Monday%20in%20Berlin.\">Reuters<\/a> quotes German Economy Minister Robert Habeck as saying. Habeck, who also serves as deputy foreign minister, said it is important to find as many partners as possible to avoid too much dependency on individual nations. Green hydrogen is a vital part of Germany\u2019s plan to move away from fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Germany has already signed a series of MoUs in the MENA region: <\/strong>UAE renewables developer Masdar <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/99df014e-1726-4272-a3ff-1f26afb4c7ab\">inked an MoU<\/a> with Austrian utilities company Verbund to co-develop green hydrogen for southern Germany. The company also <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/99df014e-1726-4272-a3ff-1f26afb4c7ab\">signed an agreement<\/a> with Germany\u2019s Uniper last December to develop a green hydrogen plant in the UAE powered by 1.3 GW of solar energy. Germany has also provided Morocco with <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b45de912-e322-4b2a-bf2b-88d4e1060db4\">EUR 38 mn<\/a> to develop its first green hydrogen plant.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #4- Soaring temperatures in southern Asia this year are <\/strong><strong>sounding alarm bells that 2023 could be the world\u2019s hottest year on record<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-05-08\/brutal-heat-continues-to-grip-asia-in-warning-for-rest-of-world?srnd=premium-middle-east&leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. Vietnam reported its highest temperature ever of 44.2\u00b0C over the weekend, while temperatures in Laos reached 43.5\u00b0C. Scorching temperatures in the Philippines sent its heat index into the \u201cdanger zone,\u201d indicating a potentially deadly mix of heat and humidity. The prolonged heat wave comes on the back of a growing El Nino weather pattern pushing temperatures to unprecedented levels. Mining companies Eurasian Resources Group (ERG) and Glencore are both founders of ReSource, a proposed JV which aims to make the global car battery chain more transparent by assuring buyers that the critical minerals used in their car batteries were mined ethically. However, critics believe that this would allow mining companies to \u201cmark their own homework\u201d and any such program should be managed by an independent body. The transparency concerns also come from an open investigation by the UK\u2019s Serious Fraud Office against one of ERG\u2019s subsidiaries, Eurasian Natural Resources Corporation, which has been accused of engaging in strategic lawsuits against public participation (Slapps), which are designed to dissuade scrutiny.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ERG has been shopping in our region:<\/strong> Last month, Luxembourg-headquartered ERG said it is looking to <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/13d1fa10-4593-42b2-907b-21886b72947f\">build up a portfolio of energy transition minerals<\/a> by investing in mining activities in MENA and the GCC. The group said it will invest <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/48a3ef3c-8ddb-4572-8be9-7345a234be1b\">USD 50 mn<\/a> in Saudi Arabia\u2019s mining sector last January, planning large-scale and tech-driven, early-stage exploration for battery transition materials in KSA\u2019s Dawadmi region where it has already secured licenses.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>CIRCLE YOUR CALENDAR- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The UAE is hosting the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/moiat.gov.ae\/en\/uae-climate-tech\">UAE Climate Tech<\/a><\/strong><strong> forum tomorrow and Thursday <\/strong>in Abu Dhabi.
