The satellites are equipped with sensors to detect the natural gas component from pipelines, unlit flares, storage tanks, and compressor stations anywhere in the world. The groundbreaking emission detection technology comes in response to demand for \u201cfacility-level information on emissions because it\u2019s directly actionable,\u2019\u2019 a Harvard researcher tells Bloomberg.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And on the subject of methane:<\/strong> Environmental groups, including US-based Gas Leaks, are pushing US federal regulators to set policies that discourage companies from using the term \u201cnatural gas\u201d in marketing campaigns, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2023-04-26\/is-natural-gas-a-greenwashing-term-climate-activists-say-yes?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported last week. The groups argue that the language implies that natural gas is a green fuel, and obscures the damaging effects of its extraction and burning. The groups suggest using alternatives including \u201cmethane gas\u201d and \u201cfossil gas.\u201d<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>The food supply for marine life in the ocean\u2019s twilight zone is at risk due to <\/strong><strong>climate change warming the world\u2019s waters<\/strong>, according to a study published in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-023-37781-6\">Nature<\/a> last week. The twilight zone \u2014 located 200 to 1k meters below the ocean\u2019s surface \u2014 is home to several specially adapted species like lantern sharks and kite fin sharks. The study suggests that warmer temperatures in the ocean could affect food supply and dissolved oxygen availability at that depth. \u201cOur findings suggest that significant changes are already underway, and without strong emissions mitigation, widespread ecological disruption in the twilight zone is likely by 2100, with effects spanning millennia thereafter,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Possible scenarios:<\/strong> The study sees three possible futures for the twilight zone: a low emission scenario that allows a total of 625 bn tons of emissions from 2010 onward, a mid-range of 2.5k bn tons, and a high one of 5k bn tons. \u201cIf we get to the medium or high scenario both are very bad news for the twilight zone,\u201d Katherine Crichton, the study\u2019s lead author, was quoted as saying by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2023\/apr\/27\/life-in-oceans-twilight-zone-could-disappear-amid-warming-seas\">The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>OTHER STORIES WORTH KNOWING ABOUT THIS MORNING-<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Europe's <strong>Cryosat spacecraft<\/strong> found that the 200k existing glaciers have <strong>lost 2% <\/strong><strong>of their weight<\/strong> in the span of <strong>10 years<\/strong>, the equivalent to <strong>2.7k bn tons<\/strong> of ice.
