In other finance news, the French Development Agency approved a EUR 1.5 mn grant to Egypt\u2019s Environment Ministry in a bid to develop the national banking sector\u2019s climate finance strategy.<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ <\/strong><strong>We have the details on these stories and more in the news well, below.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- The World Bank\u2019s executive board will<\/strong><strong> interview US candidate next month:<\/strong> The World Bank Group\u2019s executive board is reportedly planning to interview the US nominee for the development bank\u2019s presidency, Ajay Banga in May, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/world-bank-board-interview-us-nominee-banga-early-may-sources-say-2023-04-11\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing unnamed sources. The bank\u2019s current chief David Malpass informed the board his last day would be Thursday, 1 June. The same board interviewing former Mastercard CEO Banga next month said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/world-bank-board-consider-us-nominee-banga-sole-candidate-next-leader-2023-03-30\/\">March<\/a> it would consider no other nominees for WB\u2019s top post since Banga was the only candidate elected.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SPEAKING OF THE WORLD BANK- US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen will hold a roundtable discussion <\/strong><strong>t<\/strong><strong>oday on the sidelines of the World Bank Spring Meetings <\/strong>where she is expected to call for the evolution of the World Bank and other development lenders beyond the World Bank\u2019s recently proposed lending expansion target of EUR 5 bn per annum, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/finance\/yellen-push-next-steps-development-bank-evolution-spring-meetings-2023-04-10\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports, quoting an unnamed US Treasury official. Late last month, the World Bank <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/sustainable-business\/world-bank-boost-financing-capacity-ibrd-lending-arm-by-up-50-bln-malpass-2023-03-30\/\">announced<\/a> it would increase its lending capacity for climate and other crises-focused projects by USD 50 bn over the next decade while maintaining its AAA credit rating.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As expected:<\/strong> In <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ce51b4cc-5bad-4809-867e-c6eddaf29032\">March<\/a>, Yellen and Germany\u2019s acting governor to the World Bank Svenja Schulze spoke about overhauling the World Bank\u2019s financing structure ahead of COP28 to incorporate climate finance, pandemic control, and poverty reduction as top priorities. The new regulator's mandate will include establishing a rulebook outlining the requirements for issuing carbon credits, mapping out the greenhouse gas disclosure schemes companies would have to follow to verify their carbon output, and setting out the criteria for selecting verified carbon crediting bodies. The committee will be headed by FRA chief Mohamed Farid and include representatives from the country\u2019s Environment Ministry, the Egyptian Stock Exchange (EGX), and the FRA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Oman\u2019s Salalah Smart City is coming together: <\/strong>A consortium led by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fm-me.com\/\">F&M Middle East<\/a> will design the master plan for Oman\u2019s Salalah Smart City project, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muscatdaily.com\/2023\/04\/10\/consortium-appointed-for-master-planning-of-salalah-smart-city\/\">Muscat Daily<\/a> reports. The smart city\u2019s design will minimize the use of cars, provide efficient public transportation, and facilitate walking and cycling. The port city of Salalah is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.acwapower.com\/news\/acwa-power-oq-and-air-products-sign-joint-development-agreement-toward-world-scale-green-hydrogen-based-ammonia-production-facility-in-oman\/\">prime candidate<\/a> for hosting green hydrogen and green ammonia production and storage facilities and will be connected to a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/15a2e8a8-2e2f-4a1e-bb19-594d74055fd8\">planned hydrogen pipeline network<\/a>. It will also serve as the location of Oman\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e2c3c3a6-6f2b-45e9-9a05-ee907fe6ffc5\">first e-waste recycling facility<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #3- Export restrictions <\/strong><strong>on rare earths critical for EV and renewable energy production increased five-fold between 2009-2020<\/strong>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/docserver\/c6bb598b-en.pdf\">report (pdf)<\/a> by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. Nearly one-tenth of raw material sales over the last decade faced at least one form of restriction, the research found.
