<\/a> A breakthrough in energy generation? <\/strong>Scientists from Melbourne\u2019s Monash University were able to explain how a microscopic enzyme called Huc can act like a \u201cnatural battery\u201d using traces of hydrogen from the air to produce a small electrical current, in a study<\/a> published in Nature last week.<\/p>\n

What makes Huc so special?<\/strong> The enzyme\u2019s unique properties \u2014 created by bacteria to adapt and survive harsh environments including volcanic craters and Antarctica \u2014 is what gives the enzyme this super power, Bloomberg<\/a> explains. Unlike all other known enzymes and catalysts, Huc is a \u201chydrogen gas scavenger\u201d that is able to use the negligible 0.00005%concentrations of hydrogen<\/a> available in the atmosphere, the study concludes.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s still a lot we don\u2019t know:<\/strong> The researchers said that the enzyme could potentially power small devices if we figure out how it can be applied as a technology.
