It can process some 300k tons of municipal waste per year, resulting in a 30 MW production capacity \u2014 which will be fed directly into Sharjah\u2019s electricity grid, Masdar notes <a href=\"https:\/\/masdar.ae\/Masdar-Clean-Energy\/Projects\/Sharjah-Waste-to-Energy-Project#:~:text=The%20facility%20will%20process%20more,where%20necessary%2C%20sent%20to%20land%EF%AC%81lls.\">on its website<\/a>. This energy could power up to 28k homes and offset roughly 450k tons of carbon emissions every year, the statement notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Waste from Bee\u2019ah\u2019s waste management complex will serve as feedstock: <\/strong>Non-recoverable waste from Bee\u2019ah\u2019s integrated waste management complex will be thermally treated, with the heat generated then used to produce electricity. By converting non-recoverable waste to energy, the plant will help increase Sharjah\u2019s landfill waste diversion rate to 100% from its current 76% \u2014 making it the first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.covanta.com\/how-we-can-help\/solutions\/zero-waste-to-landfill\">zero waste-to-landfill<\/a> city in MENA, the statement claims.<\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ve seen Bee\u2019ah up its WtE game lately:<\/strong> Bee\u2019ah subsidiary Bee\u2019ah Recycling recently added a <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/94264c12-ac27-418f-b516-8608c300f6ce\">new solid recovered fuel processing facility<\/a> to its integrated waste management complex, which can produce some 85k tons of green fuel annually \u2014 most of which will be sold to Sharjah Cement to power its factories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Regionally, WtE is picking up interest: <\/strong>A WtE project that could convert some 1.2k tons of municipal solid waste per day to 30 MWh of electricity is being planned in Abu Rawash city, Egypt\u2019s Environment Ministry said in <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4b090702-baa7-4652-8b96-5f7c7d286520\">a recent statement<\/a>. Egypt\u2019s Suez Cement is investing USD 25 mn in plans to generate <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/af61bbd1-13d9-46c6-8c4b-4da56065fd49\">some 20 MW of power<\/a> from the waste heat recovery facility at its Helwan plant.
