Say hello to \u201cemerald\u201d hydrogen."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-03\"><\/a> <strong>New tech for lower-cost hydrogen production?<\/strong> UK-based start-up <a href=\"https:\/\/hiiroc.com\/\">HiiROC<\/a> claims to have developed technology \u2014 thermal plasma electrolysis \u2014 that it says can convert biomethane, flare gas or natgas into low-cost, zero-emissions hydrogen, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d6d749d5-89ef-42a3-b21b-0d36241768bb\">Financial Times<\/a> reports.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do they do it?<\/strong> HiiROC uses \u201ca very strong electric field inside a plasma torch\u201d to separate methane molecules, producing \u201cemerald\u201d hydrogen and a byproduct called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/carbon-black\">carbon black<\/a>. It can produce hydrogen at a micro and at an industrial scale.<\/p>\n<p><strong>A Sesame Street refresher on the colors of hydrogen: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Green<\/strong> hydrogen <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2021\/08\/24\/enterprise-explains-green-hydrogen-51370\/\">is produced<\/a> by using electrolysis powered by renewable energy sources to split water into hydrogen and oxygen.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blue<\/strong> and <strong>gray<\/strong> hydrogen <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brunel.net\/en\/blog\/renewable-energy\/3-main-types-of-hydrogen#:~:text=Grey%20Hydrogen&text=The%20process%20used%20to%20create,source%2C%20such%20as%20natural%20gas.\">are created<\/a> from natural gas or other methane sources through a process called steam methane reforming (SMR) \u2014 which uses high-temperature steam to produce hydrogen and CO2. Blue hydrogen uses carbon capture and storage (CCS) tech to prevent the CO2 from being emitted.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgrid.com\/stories\/energy-explained\/hydrogen-colour-spectrum#:~:text=Turquoise%20hydrogen%20is%20made%20using,being%20permanently%20stored%20or%20used.\">\u201cTurquoise\u201d hydrogen<\/a> is also produced by heating hydrocarbons \u2014 but the CO2 produced alongside the hydrogen is captured in solid form.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s so special about emerald? <\/strong>HiiROC\u2019s process is \u201celectrically driven\u201d (as opposed to using steam), meaning it uses less energy and has a lower emissions footprint, CEO Tim Davies tells the FT. The byproducts are also cleaner, with negligible CO2 emissions, as carbon black is usually solid. HiiROC\u2019s thermal plasma electrolysis \u201cis as cheap as SMR, without needing CCS, and a fraction of the energy\/cost of water electrolysis,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/hiiroc.com\/\">its website<\/a>. Its process takes place at the point of use, meaning the costly issues usually associated with hydrogen of all colors \u2014 production cost, storage and transportation \u2014 are avoided, the FT notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this important for us here? <\/strong>Because existing low-emissions hydrogen faces issues \u2014 including cost and distribution. Currently, green hydrogen is poised for significant growth \u2014 globally and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e9569d88-5e15-464f-a2f4-341bbb306057\">in MENA<\/a> \u2014 but it still faces some issues before it can get off the ground, as <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2e0e0236-fa86-4702-a633-f40fd2b97d11\">we noted<\/a> yesterday. These include the high cost (and limited supply) of electrolyser technology \u2014 which is still relatively early-stage \u2014 and limited capacity in green power generation. <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4af59b33-218b-47e9-85f4-7fc1ff336991\">Storage and transportation<\/a> are also currently impediments to widespread green hydrogen uptake. Working out how to scale up production remains a major challenge for green hydrogen in particular, the FT notes.<\/p>\n<p>(And, in the short term, there\u2019s the question of the demand side: We can talk about supply as much as we want, but policymakers will need to take steps \u2014 thought carrots and sticks \u2014 to ensure there is also corresponding demand from industry and other players.)<\/p>\n<p><strong>HiiROC is launching pilot projects: <\/strong>HiiROC raised GBP 2.5 mn in a 2020 funding round, followed by a further GBP 28 mn in 2021, the FT tells us. The funds raised will be used to launch pilot projects with some of its investors \u2014 including one in Germany with Wintershall Dea and VNG that could have daily production capacity of 400 kg of hydrogen, it adds.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New tech for lower-cost hydrogen production?
