{"id":74402,"date":"2022-10-19T02:01:34","date_gmt":"2022-10-19T02:01:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/climate\/2022\/10\/19\/get-ready-for-more-green-hydrogen-news-from-egypt-during-cop\/"},"modified":"2022-10-19T02:01:34","modified_gmt":"2022-10-19T02:01:34","slug":"get-ready-for-more-green-hydrogen-news-from-egypt-during-cop","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/climate\/2022\/10\/19\/get-ready-for-more-green-hydrogen-news-from-egypt-during-cop\/","title":{"rendered":"Get ready for more green hydrogen news from Egypt during COP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-02\"><\/a> <strong>Could Egypt\u2019s green hydrogen MoUs turn to concrete agreements<\/strong><strong> at <\/strong><strong>COP27?<\/strong> Egypt could unveil new framework agreements for green hydrogen projects during COP27 for \u201cat least a couple of <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/08\/28\/seven-companies-ink-green-energy-mous-79230\/\">the dozen<\/a>\u201d MoUs already signed with international companies \u2014 marking the next stage in getting them off the ground \u2014 DW said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/hydrogen-economy-egypt-to-announce-ambitious-h2-strategy\/a-63466879\">yesterday<\/a>, citing experts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Keep an eye out for Scatec \/ Fertiglobe \/ OC + ReNew:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Norway\u2019s <strong>Scatec<\/strong> \u2014 which together with <strong>Fertiglobe<\/strong> and <strong>Orascom Construction<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/04\/03\/scatec-inks-ain-sokhna-green-hydrogen-pact-with-sfe-and-oc-68181\/\">is<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/04\/03\/scatec-inks-ain-sokhna-green-hydrogen-pact-with-sfe-and-oc-68181\/\">planning<\/a> a 100 MW green hydrogen plant in Ain Sokhna \u2014 is also \u201crumored to be ready\u201d to sign framework agreements in November, DW says.<\/li>\n<li>India\u2019s <strong>ReNew Power<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/07\/28\/another-green-hydro-plant-courtesy-of-india-76718\/\">due to build<\/a> a USD 8 bn green hydrogen plant in the Suez Canal Economic Zone (SCZone), hopes to execute a framework agreement during COP27, DW quotes CEO Sumant Sinha saying. ReNew expects to complete detailed project studies within 3-6 months, \u201cleading to decisions regarding the investment by mid-2023,\u201d Sinha is quoted by DW as saying.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>And expect more in the months following COP:<\/strong> Egypt is also currently negotiating a hydrogen agreement with the EU, with the European Commission expecting \u201csome developments over the autumn,\u201d DW says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The gov\u2019t is targeting a wider range of countries: <\/strong>We might expect firms from the UAE, KSA, India and Australia to enter the market, DW notes. Egypt might also target investment from EU countries, Japan, China and Russia.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As for export markets, Egypt will likely look first to the EU: <\/strong>\u201cThe green ammonia from Egypt is more likely to go to\u2026Europe and the Far East,\u201d DW quotes Rajat Seksaria, CEO of India's <strong>ACME Group<\/strong> \u2014 which <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/08\/28\/seven-companies-ink-green-energy-mous-79230\/\">we noted has signed<\/a> an MoU for a 2.2 mn ton capacity plant \u2014 as saying. Green hydrogen serves as feedstock for green ammonia. The EU\u2019s push for more \u201cgreen steel\u201d to be made using hydrogen could also open up more production prospects for Egypt, DW notes.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But challenges remain:<\/strong> \u201cThe main hurdle for hydrogen is not production, but storage and transportation,\u201d the story quotes energy consultant Ali Habib saying. This is challenging because Egypt\u2019s strategy <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/egypt-wants-become-leader-green-hydrogen-heres-govt-private-players-plan-make-happen\/\">is export-focused<\/a>. Demand for local green hydrogen application is currently low, DW notes Habib saying. Still-pending regulation would also be essential for local use to take off, <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/egypt-lead-region-green-hydrogen-need-make-happen\/\">we noted recently<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE- <\/strong>Local industry may be more incentivized to use green hydrogen when the EU implements its plan to tax imports with a high carbon footprint, DW quotes Habib as saying.
