Speakers will include World Bank chief David Malpass, International Finance Corporation boss Makhtar Diop, and International Emissions Trading Association CEO Dirk Forrister. <a href=\"https:\/\/meetings.imf.org\/en\/2022\/Annual\/Schedule\">Tap or click here for the full schedule<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY in our corner of the world: It\u2019s all about regional green <\/strong><strong>hydrogen exports. <\/strong>Saudi renewable energy giant ACWA Power and South Korea\u2019s Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) signed an agreement this week that would see the two work together on green hydrogen production, with an eye to supplying Kepco\u2019s Korean operations. This follows a string of green hydrogen announcements ACWA has been making in recent months that appear to be positioning the company as a regional green hydrogen powerhouse.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THAT\u2019S NOT ALL: Belgium\u2019s Tree Energy Solutions wants to use green hydrogen from <\/strong><strong>our neck of the woods to produce synthetic natgas<\/strong> to replace Europe\u2019s Russian supplies. Its plan has gotten backing from several EU nations, and received a major profile in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/10\/11\/business\/green-natural-gas.html\">New York Times<\/a> this week.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO IN THE HEADLINES- UAE industrial renewables firm Yellow Door Energy (<\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yellowdoorenergy.com\/\">YDE<\/a><\/strong><strong>) <\/strong><strong>raised USD 400 mn from shareholders <\/strong>who came on board earlier this year. These include private equity giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.act.is\/\">Actis<\/a>, the International Finance Corporation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifc.org\/\">IFC<\/a>), Japanese conglomerate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitsui.com\/\">Mitsui<\/a>, and the Saudi-based Arab Petroleum Investments Corporation (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.apicorp.org\/\">Apicorp<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p><strong>^^ We have chapter and verse on these stories <\/strong>and more in this morning\u2019s news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>COUNTDOWN TO COP (24 days to go)- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>The chiefs of a number of major finance outfits will not be attending COP27<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-10-12\/blackrock-citi-ceos-won-t-be-returning-to-key-climate-talks?leadSource=uverify%20wall\">Bloomberg<\/a> reported yesterday. The CEOs of <strong>BlackRock<\/strong>,<strong> Citigroup<\/strong> and <strong>Standard Chartered<\/strong>, all of whom made a point of attending COP26, will be skipping the November meeting in Sharm El Sheikh. They\u2019re not the only ones: Bloomberg says \u201ca long list of top-level executives\u201d won\u2019t be attending, sending instead delegations of lower-tier representatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why? They\u2019re tackling more \u201cimmediate crises<\/strong>,\u201d the business information service writes, including fallout from the Russia-Ukraine war, energy crises, rising inflation and the threat of recession.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That\u2019s weak sauce, if you ask us: Overnight, the G7 group of industrialized nations said <\/strong><strong>they would \u201cintensify climate efforts despite war challenges,\u201d<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/g7-finance-leaders-pledge-intensify-climate-efforts-despite-war-challenges-2022-10-12\/\">Reuters<\/a> reports. Finance ministers and central bankers meeting on the sidelines of the IMF + World Bank meetings have arguably as much on their plate as Larry Fink and Jane Fraser do, but will \u201cnot compromise on, but rather intensify our efforts to meet our climate goals,\u201d they said. If Joe Biden can reportedly find the time to come to Sharm, folks\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Your Alarming Pre-COP Report of the Week: <\/strong>About 600 mn people across Asia and Africa will face heat waves that go beyond the \u201chuman survivability threshold,\u201d by 2100, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Mo0OLU\">a<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Mo0OLU\">report (pdf)<\/a> by the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.unocha.org\/\">OHCA<\/a>) and the International Federation of the Red Cross (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ifrc.org\/\">IFRC<\/a>) published Monday.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-08\"><\/a> <strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #1-<\/strong> <strong>Is MENA\u2019s cement industry not \u201cdriven\u201d enough to decarbonize? <\/strong>The biggest hurdle for decarbonization in the cement industry in our region is the lack of drive to act now, industry leaders concluded at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldcementassociation.org\/\">World Cement Association<\/a> (WCA) annual conference in Dubai, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/10\/2028.pdf\">statement (pdf)<\/a> out yesterday. Other limiting factors include the lack of economic incentives, such as carbon pricing and green procurement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What can MENA do? <\/strong>Certain measures can be taken that could potentially reduce carbon emissions by 47%, according to cement industry consulting firm A3&Co. These mainly include using alternative fuels and using low-emission inputs such as calcined clay which improves the strength of concrete.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SOUND SMART- <\/strong>Across the globe, cement generates the most carbon emissions per USD of revenue \u2014 with 6.9 kg of CO2 released, which is 5x more than steel, the WCA statement says. The price tag only tackles green infrastructure and technology in the power and transport sectors. This will require more than just public investments, regional VP for Asia and the Pacific at the International Finance Corporation Ruth Horowitz said. <strong>Climate change could cut the country\u2019s economic output by 0.5-2.3% by 2030,<\/strong> the report adds.<\/p>\n<p><strong>China needs to get this right for all our sakes: <\/strong>\u201cWithout China successfully transitioning to a low-carbon economy, achieving global climate goals will be impossible,\u201d the World Bank writes, adding that the country emits 27% of the world\u2019s CO2. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-needs-17-trillion-investments-meet-climate-goals-world-bank-2022-10-12\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.asiafinancial.com\/china-needs-extra-17tn-to-reach-net-zero-by-2060-world-bank\">Asia Financial<\/a>)<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>WATCH THIS SPACE #2- Climate education done right: <\/strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ead.gov.ae\/en\">Abu Dhabi Environment Agency<\/a> (EAD) launched its e-learning platform <a href=\"https:\/\/adnature.ead.ae\/#\/\">Abu Dhabi Nature<\/a> to educate users on the emirate\u2019s surrounding flora and fauna, the agency <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Mp4JIe\">announced<\/a> on Wednesday. The platform\u2019s app is currently available for schools but will be accessible to the wider public in 2023.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MENA could use a climate education boost: <\/strong>Awareness of climate-related issues has been rising, but climate education \u2014 both on the formal education level and on the capacity building side \u2014 remains weak in MENA.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Want to know more?<\/strong> Read our explainer <a href=\"https:\/\/climate.enterprise.press\/#climate-education\">here<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/greeneconomys\/everyone-knows-egypt-is-hosting-cop27-but-how-climate-literate-are-we-as-a-population\/\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>KUDOS- Oman became the latest this week the latest country in our region to make a <\/strong><strong>net-zero commitment. <\/strong>Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has set a goal of 2050, according to an Oman cabinet statement picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.muscatdaily.com\/2022\/10\/11\/oman-commits-to-net-zero-by-2050\/\">Muscat Daily<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Oman joins Saudi, Bahrain and the UAE,<\/strong> which announced net zero commitments in October of last year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.saudigreeninitiative.org\/targets\/reducing-emissions\/\">Saudi Arabia<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/cop\/bahrain-aims-reach-net-zero-carbon-emissions-2060-bna-2021-10-24\/\">Bahrain<\/a> said they aim to hit net zero by 2060, while the UAE <a href=\"https:\/\/u.ae\/en\/information-and-services\/environment-and-energy\/climate-change\/theuaesresponsetoclimatechange\/uae-net-zero-2050\">pledged<\/a> to hit the target by 2050. By our count, Qatar and Kuwait remain the only GCC holdouts. The latter said it is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enerdata.net\/publications\/daily-energy-news\/kuwait-pledges-cut-its-ghg-emissions-74-2035.html\">cutting<\/a> emissions 7.4% under the \u201cbusiness as usual scenario\u201d by 2035 and unveiled last month what it\u2019s billing as the world\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/tradearabia.com\/news\/CONS_399860.html\">largest net zero community<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>CIRCLE YOUR CALENDAR- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cairowaterweek.eg\/\">Cairo Water Week 2022<\/a><\/strong><strong> will kick off on Sunday, 16 October<\/strong> and run for four days. Discussions will revolve around climate change strategies and development plans, sustainable financing solutions, as well as water recycling, among other topics. Our friends at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) will be taking part and will discuss its water infrastructure investment program for the depollution of the Kitchener sewage drain in Egypt on Wednesday, 19 October.
