THE BIG CLIMATE STORY- Saudi Arabia\u2019s sovereign wealth fund has kicked off its <\/strong>long-awaited maiden green bond issuance<\/strong>, multiple news outlets noted yesterday. The advisers on the multi-tranche, USD-denominated offering have already started making calls to investors.<\/p>\n

ALSO- Egypt\u2019s Climate Resilience Fund has launched<\/strong> and is on the lookout for pre-seed startups that tackle climate-focused agritech solutions as it looks to raise USD 25 mn. We speak below to the founders about their plans and targets.<\/p>\n

<\/a> THE GREAT DEBATE- Qatar joins Saudi, UAE in calling for a slower <\/strong>divestment from fossil fuels: <\/strong>Qatar\u2019s Energy Minister said \u201cthat emotional demands to <\/strong>\u2018cancel\u2019<\/strong> hydrocarbons\u201d are \u201cunrealistic<\/strong> \u2026 and harmful to a realistic energy transition,\u201d the Qatar News Agency<\/a> wrote earlier this week. Geopolitical turmoil has hindered the transition towards clean energy, Saad bin Sherida Al Kaabi said at the Asia Green Growth Partnership Ministerial Meeting<\/a>. Al Kaabi, who is also the president and CEO of QatarEnergy<\/a>, said that \u201ccleaner forms of hydrocarbons, with appropriate carbon abatement solutions, are an essential part of a reliable and a responsible transition\u201d \u2014 pointing, naturally enough, to natural gas.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time we have heard this:<\/strong> The UAE and KSA aren\u2019t yet ready to do a 180<\/a>on fossil fuels<\/a>, either. Senior officials have argued for continued fossil fuel investment, saying that current renewables capacity can\u2019t meet energy demand.<\/p>\n

So what now? The answer: investing in renewable energy while also relying on \u201ccleaner\u201d <\/strong>sources like natural gas<\/strong> to \u201cmanage intermittency issues \u2014 when the sun is not shining, or when the wind is not blowing,\u201d Al Kaabi suggested. This statement was made after QatarEnergy signed agreements for the construction of the world\u2019s largest blue ammonia project, worth some USD 1 bn, we previously<\/a>wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\n

<\/a> WORTH READING- MENA\u2019s cement and construction sectors need <\/strong>2030 <\/strong>targets, <\/strong>as opposed to 2050 or 2060<\/strong>, World Cement Association CEO Ian Riley tells Zawya Projects<\/a> in a Q&A. Although 2050 and 2060 net zero targets are an important step, MENA\u2019s cement sector has made little progress in emission reduction so far.<\/p>\n

SOUND SMART- Average CO2 output per ton of cement in our region is 35% higher than <\/strong>the global average<\/strong>, Riley says.<\/p>\n

We need better public policy to drive change: <\/strong>The absence of economic incentives for cement producers to adopt sustainable technologies is one of the biggest obstacles to doing better, says Riley. In developing countries in the region, weak currencies and the rising costs of inputs are also factors.<\/p>\n

He notes that adopting sustainable processes at cement plants will not require <\/strong>significant additional capex<\/strong> and can be furthered through policies that could potentially halve the CO2 footprint of concrete. Riley adds that more transparency in emission data reporting is a first step to encouraging sustainability in cement production.<\/p>\n

\n

What\u2019s happening with PPAs in Egypt?<\/strong> Power purchase agreements (PPA) hit two birds with one stone: They ease the transition to renewable energy while mitigating the financial burden it incurs. Egypt\u2019s El Gouna<\/a>, did just that in 2020 when it signed a PPA for 16% of its energy needs with SolarizEgypt<\/a>. PPAs have become increasingly attractive as challenging economic conditions have taken a toll on investments in solar.<\/p>\n

SPEAKING OF EGYPT-<\/strong> The country\u2019s new \u201cgreen\u201d building codes for social housing got <\/strong>props from <\/strong>the <\/strong>World Bank.<\/strong> In an article<\/a> entitled \u201cEgypt\u2019s green social housing supports climate efforts and improves quality of life for citizens,\u201d the World Bank praised the program\u2019s Green Pyramid Rating System (GPRS), which rates seven areas related to a building\u2019s construction, including building materials and resources, as well as water and energy efficiency \u2014 noting that \u201cgreen buildings can reduce energy consumption by 24-50%.\u201d \u201cHousing for All\u201d is Egypt\u2019s first national green building initiative.<\/p>\n

THE COUNTDOWN TO COP-<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a> Egypt gets USD 6.2 mn in support of COP27 :<\/strong> Egypt signed an agreement with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the European Union delegation to Egypt, the embassies of Denmark and Switzerland, and the African Foundation for Climate Change and Sustainable Development for USD 6.2 mn in funding to support the country\u2019s COP27 presidency, according to an emailed UNDP statement<\/a> on Tuesday. The project will see Egypt receive technical expertise and consultations to plan and organize the summit for November.<\/p>\n

There are 40 days left until COP kicks off <\/strong>with the two-day world leaders\u2019 summit opening on 7 November. Thematic days<\/a> then run 9-17 November, starting with finance day.<\/p>\n

HAPPENING TODAY- <\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/a> The two-day <\/strong>World Green Economy Summit<\/a><\/strong> (WGES) in Dubai kicks off <\/strong>today<\/strong>.<\/strong> The gathering will focus on four different priority areas: energy, finance, food security, and youth, organizers note<\/a>.
