<\/a> Is the UAE getting \u201cgreener\u201d <\/strong>steel<\/strong>?<\/strong> ADX-listed Emirates Steel Arkan<\/a> plans to partner with two Japanese companies to conduct feasibility studies for an iron ore processing facility in Abu Dhabi, according to a statement carried by state news agency WAM<\/a>. Emirates Steel Arkan, Japanese trading and investment company Itochu Corporation<\/a> and Japanese steel manufacturing firm JFE Steel Corporation<\/a>\u2019s plant is expected to begin production in 2H 2025, the statement says. No information has been disclosed on the scale of investment in the project.<\/p>\n

SOUND SMART- What makes this project \u201cgreen\u201d? Presumably because it\u2019s using less <\/strong>coal: <\/strong>The plan is to import high-grade iron ore \u2014 which is purer and lower in emissions than other kinds of iron ore, and seen as an essential part of<\/a> lower-emissions steelmaking. The iron ore reduction process<\/a> \u2014 where metallic iron is produced \u2014 would initially be done using natural gas, in what the statement terms \u201can enhanced decarbonized process.\u201d \u201cThe project also makes provisions for the adoption of renewable energy power sources, as well as green hydrogen for the reduction process,\u201d the statement adds.<\/p>\n

Steel is one of the world\u2019s dirtiest industries: <\/strong>The iron and steel sector is thelargest<\/a>industrial producer of CO2<\/a>, other than industries involved in power generation, and accounts for some 7-9% of all direct fossil fuel emissions.<\/p>\n
