We break them all down in the news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-07\"><\/a> <strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY in our corner of the world- <\/strong>Countries along the Red Sea coast are facing what Canada\u2019s CBC says would be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/world\/un-fso-safer-salvage-funding-1.6590074\">a \u201ccatastrophic\u201d oil spill<\/a> if United Nations members don\u2019t quickly transfer several mn USD the organization needs to kickstart a salvage operation. <strong>Failure to pay up could mean we will need to take on a >USD 20 bn cleanup operation <\/strong>\u2014 and face big problems for everything from marine navigation to the tourism industry (to say nothing of the sea- and wild-life who call coastal areas home).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The problem: A decrepit oil tanker named the FSO Safer that Yemen\u2019s government had <\/strong><strong>been using to store oil<\/strong>, but that is now about to break up. The UN is seeking USD 75 mn in funding to get phase one of the project off the ground \u2014 but too many of the countries and institutions that have pledged to kick in haven\u2019t made good.<\/p>\n<p><strong>ALSO IN THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>Oman continues to rev up its hydrogen plans and is now <\/strong><strong>exploring converting its natgas pipeline to move hydrogen. <\/strong>The owner and operator of Oman\u2019s gas pipeline, state-owned OQ Gas Networks, has started running tests to assess the network\u2019s readiness to transport blue or green hydrogen within the country, managing director Mansoor Al Abdali announced recently. We have more in this morning\u2019s hydrogen story, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY outside the region- There is no single big climate story dominating the international press today<\/strong>, but here are a few interesting highlights:<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-06\"><\/a> <strong>#1- Denmark just became the first rich nation to pledge loss + damage funds to countries in <\/strong><strong>the <\/strong><strong>g<\/strong><strong>lobal south \u2014 but is it enough? <\/strong>Denmark has earmarked DKK 100 mn (USD 13.3 mn) in loss and damage aid to countries most impacted by climate change, with a focus on Africa\u2019s Sahel region, it said in <a href=\"https:\/\/via.ritzau.dk\/pressemeddelelse\/danmark-giver-100-mio-kr-til-klimatilpasning-og-klimaskabte-tab-og-skader-for-verdens-fattigste?publisherId=2012662&releaseId=13660016\">a statement<\/a>. The move marks the first time a developed nation has offered compensation for the impact of emissions on poorer countries, but activists say the sum pales in comparison to the real price tag of the damage sustained by developing countries. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/denmark-becomes-first-offer-loss-damage-climate-funding-2022-09-20\/\">Reuters<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/green\/2022\/09\/21\/denmark-becomes-first-country-to-pay-for-loss-and-damage-from-climate-change#:~:text=Denmark%20has%20just%20promised%20100,vulnerable%20regions%20of%20the%20world.\">Euronews<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/climate-environment\/2022\/09\/20\/denmark-climate-change-un-general-assembly\/\">Washington Post<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-04\"><\/a> <strong>#2- The pace of decarbonization in G20 countries reached its lowest level in 20 <\/strong><strong>years in 2021<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/g20-economies-slow-pace-decarbonisation-pwc-study-shows-2022-09-20\/\">Reuters<\/a> cites a PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) study as saying. The countries are falling short of reaching the 1.5\u00b0C cap set forth in the Paris Agreement due to rising energy costs and covid. Globally, decarbonization fell to 0.5%, far below the 12.9% target required, but in the G20 it only fell to 0.2%. Decarbonization needs to reach 15.2% a year in the aftermath of the slowdown to cap global warming at 1.5\u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Who did well? <\/strong>\u201cSouth Africa was the strongest performer, with a decrease of 4.6%, followed by Australia at 3.3% and China at 2.8%,\u201d Reuters wrote.<\/p>\n<p><strong>#3- Former US vice president Al Gore is calling the World Bank president a <\/strong><strong>\u201cclimate denier,\u201d<\/strong> urging US president Joe Biden to remove him from his post, several news outlets wrote. Al Gore argues that the bank was providing capital to fossil fuel companies operating in developing countries. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/independentpremium\/world\/world-bank-president-climate-denier-al-gore-b2172240.html\">The Independent<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-09-20\/gore-calls-for-ouster-of-world-bank-leaders-on-climate-concerns?sref=mmeFTDW1\">Bloomberg<\/a>)<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-09\"><\/a> <strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- No money for gas projects, says EIB:<\/strong> The European Investment Bank (EIB) said it will not invest in any gas projects despite calls by most African nations to recategorize gas for investments, EIB President Werner Hoyer told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/b00ea2e5-78a0-46c5-b2b0-33e6a40b96af\">FT<\/a> in an interview. \u201cWe as a European public institution should not invest in assets that one day will be seen as stranded assets,\u201d he said. The EU\u2019s lending arm should take \u201cthe energy transition seriously and move to renewables, Hoyer said, risking a clash with African nations at COP27 who are asserting their right to continue investing in oil and gas. African and developing nations argue that the move is key to their development even as some wealthier nations step up calls to phase out fossil fuels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Major Wall Street banks are threatening to ditch Mark Carney\u2019s green alliance: <\/strong>JPMorgan, Morgan Stanley and Bank of America are among those who could pull out of the former Bank of England governor\u2019s Glasgow Financial Alliance for Net Zero (GFANZ) due to what they say are legal risks associated with meeting strict decarbonization rules, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/0affebaa-c62a-49d1-9b44-b9d27f0b5600\">Financial Times<\/a> reports, citing top execs. \u201cI am close to taking us out of these global green commitments,\u201d one senior exec said. \u201cI\u2019m not going to allow third parties to create legal liabilities for us and our shareholders. It is immoral and irresponsible.\u201d GFANZ seeks to tackle climate change from within the financial system by getting members to decarbonize their combined USD 130 tn in assets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The world needs annual investments of c. USD 1 tn in renewable energy and up to USD <\/strong><strong>130 bn for hydrogen by 2030<\/strong> to avoid the crippling repercussions of climate change, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/c00f8231-0cc9-4d34-bd0d-49b493fcffb5\">FT<\/a> reported, citing a report by the International Energy Agency, the International Renewable Energy Agency and the UN ahead of COP27. The world now needs to add four times the size of renewable energy added in 2021 every year by 2030, the report showed. Last year, it was estimated that the world would need 3 TW of renewables capacity by 2030 \u2014 a data point the report upped to 8 TW. In a pre-recorded speech, the president said that the repercussions of climate change are worsening by the day as temperatures soar globally, noting the recent devastating floods in Pakistan and the forest fires in Europe over the summer. El Sisi reiterated his call for the international community to meet the pledge to provide USD 100 bn in funding every year to help developing countries mitigate and adapt to the effects of climate change.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does the Biden administration want to get out <\/strong><strong>of COP27? A strengthened position <\/strong><strong>in MENA could be one priority area. <\/strong>The Biden administration is likely to use COP27 as a chance to strengthen its position in our corner of the world \u2014 in part through its joint hosting with Egypt of the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/eg.usembassy.gov\/u-s-egypt-joint-press-release-on-climate-change\/\">Adaptation in Africa<\/a>\u201d event aimed at boosting climate change adaptation throughout the continent, UN climate change negotiator Ken Markowitz told <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energymonitor.ai\/policy\/international-treaties\/cop27-manage-your-expectations\">Energy Monitor<\/a> yesterday.<\/p>\n<p><strong>More cooperation with China could be another: <\/strong>Biden will also be looking to mend some fences with China and find common ground on climate-related issues, Markowitz predicts.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And pushing partners to up their climate ambition is a possible third: <\/strong>\u201cWith the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), the US enters this COP in its strongest negotiation position in years and it will use that as leverage to motivate its strategic partners to increase their climate ambition,\u201d Markowitz added. The USD 369 bn IRA (<a href=\"https:\/\/s3.documentcloud.org\/documents\/22128148\/inflation_reduction_act_of_2022.pdf\">pdf<\/a>) was signed into effect by Biden in August and is considered the largest climate investment bill in US history.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Need a refresher on Biden\u2019s landmark climate bill?<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3907e1bd-299f-46ad-8f42-7d0fead9dcc7\">We\u2019ve got you covered<\/a>.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"grey-line\">\n<p><strong>CLIMATE DIPLOMACY- <\/strong><strong>Egypt is advancing its climate agenda and more at the <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3xGGiA6\">UNGA<\/a><\/strong>: Egypt\u2019s Foreign Affairs Minister Sameh Shoukry held climate talks with the foreign ministers of <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3qXfGa6\">France<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3R748eZ\">Portugal<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3S4oeId\">Netherlands<\/a>, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3Bzuil9\">US Special Envoy for Yemen<\/a>on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly G77 High-Level week. Outside of discussions in national security and diplomacy, conversations focused on investments in Egypt\u2019s green transformation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Investments in green technologies in Egypt <\/strong>were on the agenda at a meeting between the COP27 President Designate and the US <a href=\"https:\/\/bciu.org\/\">Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU)<\/a>, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3R0Gwsw\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Egypt and UN Sec-Gen Antonio Guterres hosted a <\/strong><strong>closed <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/en\/climatechange\/informal-climate-leaders-roundtable-climate-action-2022\">Leaders\u2019 Roundtable<\/a><\/strong><strong> on Tuesday. <\/strong>The informal meeting addressed ensuring COP27 outcomes are met, as well as the pressing need to confront weather events that result in great human and material losses and damages, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/bit.ly\/3qYk5tm\">statement<\/a>.
