<\/a> The world\u2019s first close-to-zero-emissions ferry, French company La <\/strong>M\u00e9ridionale\u2019s <\/strong>Piana,<\/strong> launched in Marseille last week<\/strong>, Euronews reports<\/a>. The ferry\u2019s engines have been equipped with particle filters that cut air pollution, capturing 99% of sulfur oxides and eliminating 99.9% of fine and ultrafine particles \u2014 the most dangerous for human health \u2014 in what\u2019s being hailed as a first for maritime transport, according to French news station RFI<\/a>. It reduces emissions to \u201cpractically zero,\u201d Euronews adds. La M\u00e9ridionale runs passenger and freight lines from Marseille to Morocco and Corsica.<\/p>\n

The catch? It still creates lots of waste and it\u2019s expensive: <\/strong>Though no emissions are being pumped into the atmosphere, the Piana will still produce tons of waste that will then need to be buried, according to Euronews.
