ThyssenKrupp and Consolidated Contractors Company are on board to build the facility, which is expected to be up and running by 1Q 2026, according to the statement. It will be located in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DFloQrTT-H4\">Mesaieed Industrial City (MIC)<\/a>, some 40 km south of Doha, and will be operated by Qatar Fertiliser.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Ammonia-7 will be partly powered by some 35 MW of renewable energy<\/strong> supplied by QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zawya.com\/en\/projects\/utilities\/qatar-energy-awards-epc-contract-for-875-megawatt-utility-scale-solar-power-project-rlsazgwi\">MIC solar PV power plant<\/a>, which is currently under construction, the statement says.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019ll make use of carbon capture:<\/strong> QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions will develop and manage carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities to capture some 1.5 mn tons per year of CO2 from Ammonia-7 once it becomes operational, the statement adds. This is part of Qatar\u2019s broader aim to develop its CCS facilities to capture up to 11 mn tons a year of CO2 by 2035, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-31\/qatar-to-tap-global-hydrogen-market-with-1-billion-plant?srnd=premium-middle-east#xj4y7vzkg\">Bloomberg<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2022-08-31\/qatar-to-tap-global-hydrogen-market-with-1-billion-plant?srnd=premium-middle-east#xj4y7vzkg\">notes<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Is there an offtake agreement in place? <\/strong>QatarEnergy Renewable Solutions will be the sole off-taker and marketer of all blue ammonia produced by Ammonia-7, the statement notes, and production seems destined for export markets: The Ammonia-7 project offers a chance for Qatar \u201cto supply differentiated, low-carbon products and fuels to the world,\u201d QatarEnergy CEO Saad Sherida Al Kaabi was quoted as saying in the statement.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s blue ammonia again? A quick recap:<\/strong> \u2018Blue\u2019 ammonia serves as feedstock for hydrogen. Although not as environmentally-friendly as \u2018green\u2019 ammonia, it\u2019s still seen as a source of clean energy. Unlike conventional production, blue ammonia involves the use of carbon capture, which stores the CO2 underground and prevents its release into the atmosphere. Ammonia has a range of other uses, including to power ships and produce fertilizer.<\/p>\n<p><strong>MENA\u2019s overall ammonia and hydrogen development prospects are strong: <\/strong>MENA has considerable potential in both green and blue ammonia and hydrogen development, being \u201cwell-positioned\u201d to supply around 10%-20% of the global hydrogen market by 2050, according to the Arab Petroleum Investment Corporation (Apicorp)\u2019s most recent <a href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2022\/6\/APICORP-Annual-MENA-Energy-Investment-Outlook-2022-26_EN.pdf\">MENA Energy Investment Outlook (pdf)<\/a>. The region had registered over USD 26 bn in hydrogen projects <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/07\/20\/energy-investments-in-mena-are-on-the-rise-says-apicorp-76238\/\">as of July<\/a>, though most were still in the planning phase.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But blue probably has the edge on green in MENA at the moment, <\/strong>according to Apicorp. Blue ammonia and hydrogen production is an especially attractive option for the region because of its abundant oil and gas resources and the low cost of extraction, the Apicorp report added. The UAE\u2019s Adnoc said in May 2021 that is building a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.adnoc.ae\/news-and-media\/press-releases\/2021\/adnoc-to-build-world-scale-blue-ammonia-project\">\u201cworld-scale\u201d blue ammonium facility<\/a> with a 1 mn ton per annum production capacity.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>QatarEnergy\u2019s renewables arm signed agreements yesterday to build the world\u2019s largest blue ammonia plant, with a USD 1 bn price tag, the energy company announced in a statement.
