It will have an annual production capacity of 1.2 mn tons when it\u2019s completed in 2026. We have more on this in this morning\u2019s news well, below.<\/p>\n<p><strong>HAPPENING TODAY- <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/climateweek.thepeopleevents.com\/\">World Conference on Climate Change and Sustainability<\/a><\/strong><strong> kicks <\/strong><strong>off today<\/strong><strong> in Frankfurt<\/strong>, Germany. The gathering aoms to bring together \u201ca range of key actors from institutions, governments, cities and communities, the private sector, and civil society, to make the world more climate-resilient.\u201d<strong> You can also attend the event online by registering <\/strong><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/register.thepeopleevents.com\/\">here<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/africaclimateweek-gabon.org\/\">Africa Climate Week<\/a><\/strong><strong> continues in Gabon today:<\/strong> More than 1.2k African officials and climate experts are gathering this week in Libreville, Gabon, for the UN- and World Bank-led event to discuss climate issues ahead of COP27. Gabonese president, Ali Bongo Adimba, yesterday urged African governments to develop climate strategies and work on their negotiating positions ahead of the summit in November, the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/africa-united-nations-kenya-gabon-libreville-54214d878637903df07b93fbb7462b18\">Associated Press<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Talk, but little action: Egyptian Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry had some choice words <\/strong><strong>for <\/strong><strong>developed nations<\/strong>, many of which he said were \u201cbacktracking\u201d on their financial commitments and holding Africa back from adapting to climate change. \u201cThe international community is lagging behind in mitigation, adaptation and finance. This puts COP27 \u201con track to possibly become one of the most attended UN climate conferences, breaking the previous record of 42k participants at COP21 in France in 2015,\u201d the NGO\u2019s head of board of trustees told Ahram Online. EC4SDF was appointed an observer NGO for COP27 earlier in August. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/cop27.eg\/#\/how-to-attend\">You can also register to attend here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brazilian presidential candidate wants saving tropical rainforests to be a COP27 priority <\/strong><strong>\u2014 and for wealthy countries to foot more of the bill: <\/strong>Former Brazilian President \u2014 and current presidential hopeful \u2014 Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva aims to form an alliance to help developing countries secure funding and support to preserve their tropical rainforests in the run-up to COP27, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/exclusive-lula-pushes-brazil-indonesia-congo-cop-forest-alliance-if-elected-2022-08-31\/\">Reuters reports<\/a>. The idea is for Brazil, Indonesia and the Democratic Republic of Congo to collectively put pressure on rich countries to help fund the cost of keeping the forests standing, a top aide told the news outlet. \u201cThe proposal is to set up a strategic alliance to address the issue of funding at the COP in Egypt,\u201d he said. Lula\u2019s policy team is said to be particularly focused on building a global carbon market and financing rainforest conservation, the aide added.<\/p>\n<p><strong>THE DANGER ZONE-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a id=\"tldr-story-09\" class=\"content-anchor\"><\/a> <strong>Here\u2019s one of many reasons Lula is making the Amazon a top priority:<\/strong> The Amazon rainforest has just suffered its worst spate of wildfires in 12 years, according to government figures picked up by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/brazils-amazon-sees-worst-august-fires-over-decade-2022-08-31\/\">Reuters<\/a>. Satellites picked up some 1.5k fire alerts from 1-30 August, according to the country\u2019s space research agency, making it the worst August since 2010.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You probably haven\u2019t heard about it though: <\/strong>The fires last month were even worse than the blazes in August 2019 which received wall-to-wall coverage from the global media. This time around, though, the disaster has attracted only a fraction of the attention, despite the higher number of fires.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Cleanup companies need to clean up their act in Nigeria\u2019s Ogoniland, says UN:<\/strong> The USD 1 bn Ogoniland oil cleanup in Nigeria \u2014 hailed by the UN Environmental Programme (UNEP) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/nigeria-launches-1-billion-ogoniland-clean-and-restoration-programme\">in 2017<\/a> as \u201clikely to be the world's most wide-ranging and long-term oil clean up exercise ever undertaken\u201d \u2014 is actually making chemical contamination worse in one the world\u2019s most polluted areas, investigative reporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/features\/2022-08-31\/shell-s-1b-oil-cleanup-left-one-of-world-s-most-polluted-spots-dirtier-for-now#xj4y7vzkg\">by Bloomberg<\/a> reveals. Cleanup efforts which began in 2019 have suffered from \u201crampant mismanagement, incompetence, waste and lack of transparency,\u201d Bloomberg claims, citing UNEP documents it has obtained.<\/p>\n<p><strong>SIGN OF THE TIMES- The water of the Arabian Gulf is so hot, it threw Iran\u2019s nuclear <\/strong><strong>power production a curveball: <\/strong>Water temperature of the Persian Gulf rose to 34-35\u00b0C, causing Iran\u2019s Bushehr nuclear power plant to halt for a few weeks this summer, Atomic Energy Organization chief Mohammad Eslami told Iranian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.isna.ir\/news\/1401060907107\/%D8%A7%D8%B3%D9%84%D8%A7%D9%85%DB%8C-%D9%85%D8%B0%D8%A7%DA%A9%D8%B1%D9%87-%DA%A9%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B3-%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%B4%D8%A7%D8%A1-%D9%86%DB%8C%D8%B3%D8%AA-%D8%B3%D9%88%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%A2%DA%98%D8%A7%D9%86%D8%B3-%D8%A8%D8%B3%D8%AA%D9%87-%D9%86%D8%B4%D9%88%D8%AF-%D8%B1%D9%88%D8%B2-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D8%B2\">Iranian Students\u2019 News Agency<\/a>. The water is used to cool nuclear reactors down and usually does not exceed 25\u00b0C.
