{"id":73730,"date":"2022-08-31T02:00:19","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T02:00:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/climate\/2022\/08\/31\/moroccos-usd-18-bn-renewables-export-hub\/"},"modified":"2022-08-31T02:00:19","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T02:00:19","slug":"moroccos-usd-18-bn-renewables-export-hub","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/enterpriseam.com\/climate\/2022\/08\/31\/moroccos-usd-18-bn-renewables-export-hub\/","title":{"rendered":"Morocco\u2019s USD 18 bn renewables export hub"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a class=\"content-anchor\" id=\"tldr-story-01\"><\/a> <strong>How Morocco is positioning itself as a global leader in renewables with one ambitious <\/strong><strong>megaproject: <\/strong>Morocco\u2019s ambitions to become a global leader in renewable energy got a major shot in the arm <a href=\"https:\/\/xlinks.co\/renewable-energy-project-announcement\/\">back in 2021<\/a>, when it announced plans to generate a whopping 10.5 GW of solar and wind energy from just one project and on-site battery storage by 2030 \u2014 far outstripping regional rival Egypt\u2019s Benban solar park\u2019s 1.8 GW.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Details:<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/xlinks.co\/morocco-uk-power-project\/\">Xlinks<\/a> project boasts a total size of 1.5 mn sqm \u2014 200k sqm of solar arrays alone. The project will also include a 20 GWh lithium-ion battery storage facility.<\/p>\n<p><strong>With plans to become a major electricity exporter to the UK:<\/strong> The project aims to export 3.6 GW of electricity to the UK through four sub-sea cables stretching 3.8k km \u2014 potentially the world\u2019s longest undersea electric cable connection. When completed, the project is expected to supply 8% of the UK\u2019s electricity needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The kicker? The cost: The project<\/strong><strong> is expected to cost <\/strong><strong>USD 18 bn.<\/strong> As of May, Xlinks \u2014 whose board members include <a href=\"https:\/\/xlinks.co\/who-we-are\/\">ACWA Power\u2019s CEO<\/a> Paddy Padmanathan \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.africa-energy.com\/news-centre\/article\/xlinks-raises-further-finance-morocco-uk-power-project\">had raised<\/a> an investment of undisclosed size from UK-based energy supplier <a href=\"https:\/\/octopus.energy\/\">Octopus Energy Group<\/a> and was in talks to for additional funding.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Morocco is already one of the region\u2019s solar energy leaders:<\/strong> Morocco\u2019s Noor Ouarzazate solar power complex <a href=\"https:\/\/constructionreviewonline.com\/biggest-projects\/noor-ouarzazate-solar-complex-worlds-largest-concentrated-solar-power-plant\/\">is among the world\u2019s<\/a> largest concentrated solar power facilities and currently has 510 MW capacity from its three separate, co-located power stations: Noor I (160 MW), Noor II (200 MW), and Noor III (150 MW). A 72 MW fourth station, Noor IV, is also planned, according to energy analyst and writer Llewellyn King, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/llewellynking\/2022\/08\/01\/morocco-wants-to-be-a-destination-for-renewable-energy\/?sh=7242c5943f06\">recently interviewed<\/a> Energy Transition and Sustainable Development Minister Leila Benali.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It uses different kinds of solar tech to produce energy:<\/strong> Noor I and II use one kind of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.energy.gov\/eere\/solar\/concentrating-solar-thermal-power-basics#:~:text=CSP%20technologies%20use%20mirrors%20to,an%20engine%20to%20generate%20electricity.\">concentrated solar power (CSP) technology<\/a>, and Noor III uses another, while Noor IV will make use of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.gov\/energyexplained\/solar\/photovoltaics-and-electricity.php#:~:text=A%20photovoltaic%20(PV)%20cell%2C,convert%20artificial%20light%20into%20electricity.\">photovoltaic (PV) cells<\/a>, Benali told King. CSP \u2014 which uses steam generated from heated water to produce electricity \u2014 requires collector and generator systems, and is more expensive and water-intensive than PV. These days, it\u2019s most widely used in hot countries like Spain and Israel. By contrast, PV \u2014 which produces electricity directly \u2014 is the most widely used solar tech in the US and Europe, as PV cells have become very inexpensive.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CSP can store energy and extend power availability: <\/strong>CSP\u2019s big advantage is that it can store power, helping to resolve the issue of peak energy demand often coming at night or early in the morning, when there is no sunlight. Surplus heat from CSP renewable energy production can be stored in molten salt and used when needed \u2014 \u201cfor electricity generation or other purposes,\u201d King noted. Noor I has three hours of storage capacity, while Noor II and III have seven hours each. Benali hopes that stored solar heat could also be used for hydrogen production or desalination, she said.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Morocco is also eyeing more exports to existing markets Spain and Portugal<\/strong> through its existing two electricity interconnections with Europe, Benali said. Morocco\u2019s two electricity interconnections with Europe have a total capacity of 1.4 GW. Power flows both ways between them, \u201cdepending on generating and market conditions in Europe and Morocco,\u201d Benali told King.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s good news for Europe, which is looking to lock in more of its energy needs from MENA after pulling back from Russia. <\/strong>Members of the European Union and the UK are looking to buy more electricity from North Africa and more natural gas from Egypt and Israel in a bid to lessen their reliance on Moscow now and in the long run.<\/p>\n<p><strong>As we know, linking electricity grids is a growing trend in MENA:<\/strong> A proposed direct link between the electricity grids of Egypt and Greece <a href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.press\/stories\/2022\/06\/01\/the-war-in-ukraine-is-accelerating-plans-to-link-our-electricity-grid-to-greece-72429\/\">was recently said<\/a> to be accelerating, as Europe looks to transition away from Russian fossil fuels.
