There\u2019s a lot to unpack since you last heard from us, so let\u2019s jump right in.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG STORY ABROAD THIS WEEK- <\/strong><strong>Biden bans coastal oil and gas drilling: <\/strong>US President Joe Biden banned new oil and gas drilling along 625 mn acres of US coastal waters \u2014 the entire eastern U.S. Atlantic coast and the Eastern Gulf of Mexico \u2014 due \u201cenvironmental and economic risks\u201d this week, according to a White House <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2025\/01\/06\/fact-sheet-president-biden-protects-atlantic-and-pacific-coasts-from-offshore-oil-and-gas-drilling\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. \u201cMy decision reflects what coastal communities, businesses and beachgoers have known for a long time: that drilling off these coasts could cause irreversible damage to places we hold dear and is unnecessary to meet our nation\u2019s energy needs,\u201d Biden said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The catch:<\/strong> Large areas of the Gulf of Mexico \u2014 where most US offshore drilling takes place and is already underway \u2014 would not be affected, pushing some to call the ban symbolic. The platform will market potential investments and streamline investors\u2019 access to data. The country\u2019s Oil and Mining Ministry has been reportedly preparing to launch a new bid for mineral exploration in several areas in the under-explored Western Desert, with the hope of expanding the mining sector\u2019s contribution to the GDP to 5% from 1%.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ALSO- Another step forward for Egypt\u2019s Dabaa nuclear plant:<\/strong> Egypt\u2019s Nuclear and Radiological Regulatory Authority has granted the Nuclear Power Plants Authority the go-ahead to establish a storage unit for spent fuel at the Dabaa nuclear power plant, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/NPPAEGYPT\/posts\/pfbid02DjCi8ZCWpoe5FLGNuTyZFwRnDSmQwZBp3Gpj3oZ6UJVbp1WKfanuXQaGJfVw3ZWyl?rdid=DuBwHze24rwD3I3R#\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> published last week. The new facility will store spent nuclear fuel for up to 100 years, with construction planned for this year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>After a few years of use, nuclear fuel loses its thermal efficiency and becomes no longer useful for generating electricity but becomes progressively more radioactive. At this point in its lifecycle, this nuclear fuel waste \u2014 dubbed as spent fuel \u2014 is isolated underwater to shield plant workers from the waste\u2019s heat and radioactivity, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrc.gov\/reading-rm\/basic-ref\/students\/science-101\/what-is-an-spent-fuel.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">US Nuclear Regulatory Commission<\/a>. These pools require steel-reinforced concrete walls and stainless steel liners and are sealed to prevent waste leakage. Spent fuel is isolated in these pools long-term or for at least a few years to cool before moving for permanent storage locations. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><strong>#2- We have new details on <\/strong><strong>H2 Global Energy\u2019s green <\/strong><strong>hydrogen <\/strong><strong>project in Tunisia: <\/strong>Dubai-based <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/h2-global-energy\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">H2<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/company\/h2-global-energy\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Global Energy<\/a> and Irish Aramenco\u2019s consortium will set up a USD 6 bn green hydrogen project with a 1.2 - 1.8 GW electrolyzer capacity in Tunisia slated for operation in 2031, Aramenco\u2019s CCO Waleed al-Hallaj told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hydrogeninsight.com\/production\/dubai-based-developer-unveils-plan-for-6bn-gigawatt-scale-green-hydrogen-project-in-tunisia\/2-1-1760393\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Hydrogen Insight<\/a> on Monday. The project \u2013 to be funded by shareholder equity \u2013 will produce 180k tons of green hydrogen annually with construction expected to kick off in 2028. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>The consortium had <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c3c53f08-98a0-4a2a-8e15-11267b195235\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an MoU<\/a> with Tunisian authorities for a green hydrogen and ammonia project in June 2024.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Wider regional plans: <\/strong>H2 Global and Amarenco also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/fa1dac1f-fb88-4531-a59f-1457b22b1321\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an agreement<\/a> with the Jordanian government to develop a EUR 9 bn green ammonia generation project in the Kingdom back in 2023. The JV aims to produce 5 mn tons of green ammonia between from 2027 to 2032. Lupro will hold a majority of 80% stake in the JV. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The project already secured an offtaker:<\/strong> Lupro signed a KRW 6.5 tn (c. USD 4.5 bn) supply agreement with Thailand\u2019s MA Corporation for 10 years, according to a separate <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lupro.co.kr\/eng\/bbs\/board.php?bo_table=press&wr_id=27\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>More about the plant: <\/strong>Construction of the new green ammonia facility will begin this year in the Duhuk FreeEconomic Zone. The first production phase will be powered by 2 GW of solar and wind capacity, with exports to Thailand planned to kick off in 2027.
