First, a health check on the UK green transition\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>Energy<\/strong><strong> firms pledge GBP 70 bn to <\/strong><strong>upgrade UK power grid:<\/strong> Owners of the UK and Wales high voltage power system \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgrid.co.uk\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">National Grid<\/a>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sse.com\/about-us\/our-businesses\/sse-energy-solutions\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">SSE<\/a>, and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scottishpower.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ScottishPower<\/a> \u2014 have pledged to spend up to GBP 77 bn from 2026 to 2031 to support the country\u2019s energy transition. The investments will \u201cnearly double the amount of energy that can be transported around the country [and] support the electrification of the industries,\u201d National Grid executive John Pettigrew said. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters: <\/strong>The UK is currently experiencing a backlog of connection requests, especially from offshore wind which had cost the country <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GBP 1 bn of waste payments<\/a> and raised prices on consumers. Such capacity expansion will allow households to save on energy bills by minimizing money paid to producers to turn off their projects when the power grid is overwhelmed. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The story grabbed some ink in the int\u2019l press: <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/uks-national-grid-invest-up-44-bln-transmission-business-2024-12-18\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> | <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/80109d5f-641b-46e2-8966-d611f794bfdb\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a> | <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/business\/energy-oil\/national-grid-to-invest-up-to-44-5-billion-in-electricity-transmission-81c3b048\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> | <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/business\/2024\/dec\/18\/energy-firms-rewire-great-britain-electricity-grid\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Guardian<\/a> <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><strong>#1- <\/strong><strong>Egypt to fast track Amea\u2019s Benban solar plant: <\/strong>UAE\u2019s Amea Power will receive a golden license from Egypt for its 1 GW solar power plant with 600 MWh battery storage system in Benban after the cabinet approved the move. The project will see investments of USD 850 mn and will be carried out across two phases, the first will start operations next August and see 300 MW of power and half the battery storage capacity come online and the second will kick off operations in April. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Remember: <\/strong>AMEA <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1a6ea914-51df-4377-a0cf-7f151462dbe8\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">inked the purchase power agreement<\/a> for the project with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company in September. The project is expected to be the continent\u2019s largest. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Amea\u2019s been busy: <\/strong>The firm is <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0d82ec83-5cdf-4327-ac16-6a32e2c55a0e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">working to set up<\/a> a USD 600 mn, 5 GW wind power project in the Gulf of Suez in cooperation with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company and the New and Renewable Energy Authority. Earlier this month, Amea inaugurated its 500 MW Abydos solar plant in Kom Ombo. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IN OTHER EGYPT NEWS- A financing boost for those switching to EVs: <\/strong>The Egyptian cabinet approved a draft law amending the Traffic Law to include expand the list of those eligible for financing under the fund granting support to those who purchase green vehicles to include those retrofitting vehicles \u2014 only those manufactured in the past 20 years \u2014 to run on clean energy as well as for purchasing eco-friendly vehicles.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a><strong>#2- A Saudi research team is preparing to launch a commercial pilot <\/strong><strong>project to extract <\/strong><strong>lithium<\/strong><strong> from brine samples in Aramco oilfields<\/strong>, KSA\u2019s vice mining minister Khalid al-Mudaifer told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/saudi-arabia-has-extracted-lithium-oilfield-runoffs-vice-minister-says-2024-12-17\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>. The project is spearheaded by Lithium Infinity (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lihytech.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Lihytech<\/a>), a startup from King Abdullah University for Science and Tech (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kaust.edu.sa\/en\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Kaust<\/a>), in collaboration with Ma\u2019aden and Aramco. The startup will deploy its own direct lithium extraction technology developed by Kaust. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> Extracting lithium from oilfield brine remains more costly than traditional salt flat extraction methods, but KSA believes rising lithium prices could make the process commercially viable in the future. KSA and the UAE have been exploring lithium extraction from oil runoff \u2014 a strategy being mirrored by other oil giants like Exxon Mobil and Occidental Petroleum, which are investing in tech to filter lithium from brine.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a><strong>#3- Sonelgaz taps GE Vernova for potential renewables collaboration: <\/strong>Algeria\u2019s state-owned Sonlegaz\u2019s CEO and President Mourad Adjal paid a visit to GE Vernova in Atlanta to discuss expanding their renewables collaboration. The two parties explored the possibility of adding a production line for transformers under their joint venture GE Algeria Turbines (GEAT) to be used for renewable energy projects at home or for exports, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/12\/1782.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">press release (pdf)<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>Sonelgaz <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/30be6086-e042-404c-9f75-d8c7af80b249\/ev,-renewables,-and-green-finance-updates-from-the-uae,-egypt,-kuwait-and-algeria\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">placed a major order<\/a> of electricity grid equipment from GE Vernova through GEAT to support the integration of renewables to Algeria\u2019s grid. GEAT will install high voltage equipment, components, and grid automation solutions for 134 substations by 2028 at Sonelgaz\u2019s facility in Ain Yagout. Sonelgaz and GE Vernova signed an agreement earlier this year to expand GEAT towards high and extra-high voltage substations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- Ecuador has closed its second debt-for-nature swap, unlocking USD 460 mn to fund <\/strong><strong>conservation efforts in its Amazon rainforest<\/strong>, NGO The Nature Conservancy (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.org\/en-us\/newsroom\/ecuador-announces-debt-conversion-for-amazon-conservation-tnc-nature-bonds\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">TNC<\/a>) said. The deal will help protect 4.6 mn hectares of existing protected areas, 1.8 mn hectares of forests and wetlands, and 18k km of rivers through the Amazon Biocorridor Program. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The financials:<\/strong> The program is refinancing around USD 1.5 of Ecuadorian bond debt and is generating over USD 800 in net fiscal savings by 2035 via a USD 500 mn savings over 17 years and reduced debt stock of USD 527 mn. The transaction was managed by BoA Securities, ad was supported by USD 1 bn in political risk ins. from the US Development Finance Corporation and a USD 155 mn partial credit guarantee from the Inter-American Development Bank. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The breakdown of conservation payments:<\/strong> The program is expected to generate USD 23.5 mn annually over 17 years, with USD 19 mn directed to conservation efforts and USD 4.5 mn set aside in an endowment fund.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This is not the first debt-for-nature swap for Ecuador:<\/strong> The first swap \u2014 of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/2889f15a-a842-473c-9569-d33c1f9bddce\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 1.6 bn<\/a> for conservation efforts in Galapagos islands \u2014 was under <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f46d4ece-0146-4eaa-8ca4-6a1acfc34a5c\/today:-riyad-bank-closes-usd-750-mn-sustainable-sukuk-issuance\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">investigation<\/a> in September by the Inter-American Development Bank\u2019s oversight body after complaints from local groups over transparency. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#5- US graphite industry petition may trigger major tariffs on Chinese imports:<\/strong> A trade association representing the US graphite industry filed petitions with two federal agencies to investigate alleged anti-dumping violations made by Chinese graphite producers, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-12-18\/us-graphite-firms-seek-920-duty-to-thwart-china-on-ev-material\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. The group \u2014 which hopes their petition could trigger 920% tariffs on graphite imports from China \u2014 argues that subsidies in China give its producers an unfair advantage by enabling them to lower their prices artificially. A decision will not be made until well into 2025. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The consequences: <\/strong>The US does not produce its own synthetic graphite at present, and battery production in the US is already 20% more expensive than in China. With graphite accounting for 10% of the cost of EV making, a 900% tariff could double the prices of US-made EVs, says Guidehouse Insights analyst Sam Abuelsamid. Tesla \u2014 a major supporter of the incoming administration \u2014 would also be hit hard by the tariffs but had previously successfully lobbied for an exemption when Trump was first in office. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And it\u2019s hard to source graphite from outside China: <\/strong>Tesla had claimed that only China producers can meet its required specifications. LG and SK Battery America \u2014 two South Korean battery makers with plants in the US \u2014 have also said that they are struggling with alternatives. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ICYMI- The US is taking the graphite war seriously: <\/strong>The US just <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1f41c697-d3f0-44cb-957b-7b04eda5b100\/equinor-and-partners-to-combine-offshore-wind-projects\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">approved a conditional loan<\/a> of USD 755 mn to fund the Australian battery materials company Novonix\u2019s graphite factory this week. The factory \u2014 set to be North America\u2019s largest synthetic graphite facility \u2014 will be able to produce enough graphite to supply 325k EVs annually by 2028. The developments include two transmission lines, one extending 128 km for Dzhankeldy and one 160 km long for Bash.
