Before we get to it, some disappointing news on the climate conference front from Saudi\u2026.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>Riyadh\u2019s <\/strong><strong>COP16 drought talks <\/strong><strong>concluded yesterday <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unccd.int\/news-stories\/press-releases\/united-nations-conference-riyadh-charts-path-global-action-land-drought\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">without a binding agreement<\/a><\/strong> as negotiators from 196 countries and the European Union were unable to reach an agreement on how to respond to drought on a global scale. The 12-day UN Convention to Combat Desertification was held in Riyadh. Meanwhile, more than <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/514151df-7023-4257-af80-1e315fb91cc1\/acg-pledges-usd-10-bn-at-cop16-bringing-total-pledges-up-to%253cmark%253e-usd-12-bn%253c%2Fmark%253e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 12 bn<\/a> were pledged to tackle desertification, land degradation, and drought. The agreement will also help increase Abu Qir 1 ammonia plant capacity while preparing the company\u2019s exports for the EU\u2019s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). The second agreement was signed with the Swedish-Swiss multinational <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/global.abb\/group\/en\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ABB Group<\/a> to install a smart control system to optimize natural gas consumption in Abu Qir 1 ammonia plant\u2019s boiler, with plans to explore extending the system to Abu Qir 2 and 3 plants. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- <\/strong>The company said last week it wants to deploy <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/826149d6-ed7d-46bf-a098-b78908fcb92e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">50 tons of green hydrogen<\/a> daily to displace an unidentified amount of natural gas in the Abu Qir 2 and 3 ammonia plants while increasing the production capacity of the Abu Qir 1 plant from 1.1k tons to 1.2k tons. The project is expected to be completed within 12 months.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This has been in the works: <\/strong>Abu Qir <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c946439f-ad06-4f1e-9bf4-7ff3ba94a1e7\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed MoUs<\/a> with ABB Group, MPS, and Egypt\u2019s state-owned construction firm Petrojet back in January to supply green hydrogen and renewable electricity to produce green ammonia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#3- PIF-backed Lucid is shopping for potential partnerships with traditional <\/strong><strong>automakers in a bid to expand its market reach, <\/strong>CEO Peter Rawlinson told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-12-12\/lucid-ceo-says-ev-maker-in-talks-with-auto-brands-on-partnership\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> on Thursday. The company is banking on the new SUV model for a boost in sales volume to help it narrow its recent losses.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Other EV players are pursuing this type of partnership: <\/strong>Abdul Latif Jameel-backed Rivian recently partnered with Volkswagen (VW) in a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/32d25625-2dec-4d27-b9fd-a95f07eb31b6\/abdul-latif-jameel-backed-ev-maker%253cmark%253e-rivian%253c%2Fmark%253e-to-get-usd-5-bn-investment-from-volkswagen\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">50\/50 joint venture<\/a> to pool tech, with VW pumping up to USD 5 bn in investments in exchange for immediate access to Rivian\u2019s EV software. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- Lucid has already secured a partnership: <\/strong>In <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/29826a3b-6f1c-488a-8ffe-eb2838793aa6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">July 2023<\/a>, Lucid inked a USD 450 mn partnership agreement with Aston Martin to make the British ultra-luxury car maker\u2019s future electric vehicles. The agreement paves the way for Lucid to grab a 3.7% stake in Aston Martin in return for its access to \u201chigh-performance\u201d EV tech. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>#4- Oman\u2019s Hydrom is launching <\/strong><strong>the third round of public lands bidding for green hydrogen projects in Oman in 1Q of 2025<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/omannews.gov.om\/topics\/en\/80\/show\/120076\/dark\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">ONA<\/a> reported last week. The new bidding round will be available for both international and local investors and will prioritize projects that boost in-country value and infrastructure readiness, with winning projects expected to be announced in 4Q of 2025 and 1Q of 2026. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What\u2019s different in this round? <\/strong>Unlike previous auctions that targeted mega-developments, this round will include options for smaller-scale projects, Hydrom\u2019s managing director Abdulaziz Al Shidhani told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/business\/energy\/2024\/12\/11\/oman-vows-to-press-ahead-with-green-hydrogen-plans-amid-growing-pains\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The National<\/a>. The projects will bring Oman\u2019s total planned hydrogen production to 1.38 mn tons per year by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>IN OTHER HYDROM NEWS: <\/strong>Hydrom and Thyssenkrupp Nucera have signed an MoU to explore the localization of assembly and service hubs for water electrolyzers, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thyssenkrupp-nucera.com\/hydrom-and-thyssenkrupp-nucera-collaborate-on-developing-omans-green-hydrogen-industry\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a> published last week. EU climate chief Wopke Hoekstra will not budge on the deadline, firmly telling Reuters, \u201cNo. The answer is no.\u201d <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Background: <\/strong>EPP launched a campaign to loosen the rules before their 2025 enforcement date, suggesting that the Commission allow carmakers to miss next year's deadline by using a three-year average, which would give companies time to catch up in 2026 and 2027.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The fines are staggering: <\/strong>Many carmakers are expected to miss the 2025 targets and the industry could potentially lose up to EUR 15 bn in fines, European automaker association ACEA said. Stellantis, however, is one automaker that is confident it will be compliant with the EU\u2019s targets, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/stellantis-align-acea-proposals-after-rejoining-lobby-group-2024-12-12\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reported on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>[<a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#6- Investments in geothermal energy could hit USD 1 tn by 2035 and USD 2.5 tn by <\/strong><strong>2050 <\/strong>if significant cost reductions for the geothermal sector materialize, an International Energy Agency (IEA) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/12\/1345.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a> released this month found. The investment could reach an annual peak of USD 140 bn, outpacing current onshore wind investments, the report added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why geothermal energy? <\/strong>Geothermal energy is continuous, allowing plants to operate at full capacity around the clock, irrelevant to weather changes, unlike solar and wind. It currently boasts an average utilization rate of 75% in 2023 compared to less than 30% and 15% for wind and solar PV, respectively. The full technical potential of next-generation geothermal systems could meet 140 times the global electricity demand, which the report says is the first potential analysis for this type of energy. The energy source is also 80% compatible with oil and gas capacity and skills, which makes it a transferable industry. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Who is interested? <\/strong>The power source is receiving interest from the energy sector and technology companies looking to support their energy-intensive data centers. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But cost reduction is necessary: <\/strong>The costs of next-generation geothermal energy are currently high compared to other low-emission alternatives but with sufficient support from policymakers and the oil and gas industry, costs could fall by 80% by 2035, the IEA estimates. If costs are reduced, new geothermal projects could supply energy at around USD 50 per MWh to make it one of the cheapest forms of dispatchable low-emissions electricity, making it a competitive alternative to wind, solar PV, hydro, and nuclear when paired with battery storage. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What would policy support look like? <\/strong>Policy support is lacking for geothermal, with only 30 countries implementing policies to support it. To reach its full potential, governments will have to move it up to its clean energy policy agenda, setting specific roadmaps and strategies while also investing in tech and research. The report also recommends the adoption of policies that reduce regulatory uncertainty, mitigate risks, increase revenue certainty for developers, and invest in human skills. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WORTH WATCHING- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>AI <\/strong><strong>designed a new efficient wind turbine: <\/strong>The University of Birmingham has unveiled the Birmingham Blade, the world's first urban wind turbine designed by AI and fully tailored to Birmingham's unique wind conditions, Reuters reported last week (<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/video\/watch\/idRW607510122024RP1\/?chan=business-energy\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">watch, runtime 1:59<\/a>). AI design specialists at the University\u2019s AI prototyping venture <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/evophase.co.uk\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EvoPhase<\/a> created a turbine they claim is up to seven times more efficient than existing designs in the area, thanks to the AI-driven design process that generated and tested over 2k designs in about a week before picking the most optimal design for the area. Asia is set to lose almost 7% during the same period. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ON THE OTHER END OF THE SPECTRUM- High temperatures are releasing carbon from <\/strong><strong>thawing tundra: <\/strong>The Arctic is now releasing more CO2 than it stores in a worrying trend shift, according to an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/12\/1217.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">annual report (pdf)<\/a> by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. As the Arctic warms at rates that fast exceed any other areas on Earth, the report warns of a positive feedback loop intensifying the effects of climate change. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A categorical shift: <\/strong>There are eight key indicators, or \u201cvital signs,\u201d of the Arctic Circle\u2019s health, including shrinking sea ice, warmer water, higher precipitation, and greening tundra, which all have seen extreme changes compared to a decade or two ago. The new rules will require capturing the gas for mines that emit methane with a content of 8% or higher, a far tighter cap than the 30% imposed since 2008. These rules will apply to any new mines after April next year and to existing mines by April 2027.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why it matters:<\/strong> Methane emissions from coal mines account for around 40% of the country's total methane emissions, with a similar amount generated from agricultural activities.
