First, a big development on the wind business front\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><\/strong><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>BP + Japan\u2019s Jera form a <\/strong><strong>new JV: <\/strong>British oil giant BP and Japan\u2019s biggest power producer Jera will combine their offshore wind businesses to form a new JV called Jera Nex bp in a GPB 4.5 bn agreement. The JV will boast a 13 GW total potential net generating capacity \u2014 including 1 GW of Jera\u2019s operating assets and BP\u2019s vast pipeline \u2014 making it one of the world\u2019s top five offshore wind producers. The new venture will focus on existing projects in North-West Europe, Australia, and Japan before studying further expansion. This approach is designed to ensure that producers take ownership of the environmental impacts of their products and foster public-private partnerships to develop innovative waste management solutions. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Uhh, what\u2019s EPR?<\/strong> Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/epr.sustainablepackaging.org\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">policy approach<\/a> that assigns producers responsible for managing their products' impacts until the post-consumer or post-use point in a product\u2019s lifecycle. This can include both financial and operational duties, such as providing funding and services to manage products after their use phase. Other metals like aluminum and zinc also had their 2025 forecasts cut by 4% to USD 2.64k and 5% to USD 2.8k, respectively. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">DANGER ZONE- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>T<\/strong><strong>he <\/strong><strong>Arctic could see its first icefree day before 2030: <\/strong>The Arctic Ocean may experience its first icefree day before 2030, much sooner than anticipated and especially in the case of warmer springs, according to a new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/12\/805.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">study (pdf)<\/a> published in Nature Journal. The northern polar area has consistently had 50% less ice cover during late summers since the 1980s, according to the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/63fbcf2b-9acc-4ccb-ac12-9f3b78e85b68\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a>. The previous record minimum of sea ice cover happened in 2012, when the ice shrank to 3.4 mn sqkm, about half the 1981-2010 average. The fastest sea ice loss simulations are unlikely, but they remain a possibility, similar to rare thousand-year flood events. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What does \u201cicefree\u201d mean? <\/strong>The Arctic is considered icefree when its waters have less than one mn sqkm of sea ice, with the remaining ice primarily located north of Greenland and the Canadian archipelago. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>How bad is it?<\/strong> The study's authors warn that sea ice loss can further accelerate climate change through a feedback loop triggered by the diminishing <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/greenly.earth\/en-us\/blog\/ecology-news\/what-is-the-albedo-effect-and-how-does-it-impact-global-warming\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Albedo effect<\/a>, leaving the darker ocean surface to absorb more heat without reflective ice. The melting of sea ice cover may also trigger more extreme weather events in the mid-latitudes, whereas some species are being forced onto land due to the lack of sea ice for hunting, and others are moving further north into previously uninhabitable waters. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ICYMI-<\/strong> <strong>Antarctica is also in the danger zone:<\/strong> The southern polar area\u2019s sea ice is also set for a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/32b9dd41-d894-4f3f-a5c6-e20bb546a487\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">record winter low<\/a> for the second consecutive year, continuing a decline in the Southern Ocean's frozen stretch. The sea ice cover around Antarctica plummeted for six months last year, ending the winter with about 1.6 mn sq km less ice than the long-term average. This year, the ice levels are even lower than last year's on the same date, indicating a significant shift in the Antarctic system.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">THE SCORECARD- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>2024 <\/strong><strong>will be the hottest year on record: <\/strong>This year is set to be the warmest on record, according to the EU's <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/climate.copernicus.eu\/copernicus-second-warmest-november-globally-confirms-expectation-2024-warmest-year\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Copernicus Climate Change Service<\/a>. Data from January to November confirmed that 2024 will be the hottest year since records began, surpassing the previous record set in 2023. While 2024 would break the record, the trend is carried over from last year, with 16 out of the previous 17 consecutive months scoring global-average surface air temperatures exceeding 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. Sea surface temperatures (SST) for November 2024 were also the second-highest on record, and the Antarctic sea ice extent was the lowest on record for the month, at 10% below average, which is also the third lowest on record. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The consequences: <\/strong>The rapid pace of climate change in the polar regions \u2014 which a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-022-00498-3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">2022<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s43247-022-00498-3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> showed have been warming four times faster than the rest of the planet \u2014 poses significant threats to ecosystems, infrastructure, and livelihoods, Imperial College London's senior lecturer Friederike Otto told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/environment\/2024-will-be-hottest-year-record-eu-scientists-say-2024-12-09\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a>. The new wind energy unit \u2014 designed to be installed on the edge of a building to maximize wind utilization \u2014 features vertical airfoils that induce a vacuum effect, forcing air to be sucked behind a propeller, generating power. The company claims that its design maximizes wind utilization by <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/undecidedmf.com\/how-can-a-wind-turbine-be-motionless\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">accelerating wind speed<\/a> and creating a low-pressure zone that draws wind through perforations, driving a fully enclosed turbine. It also operates efficiently at lower wind speeds, making it a versatile option for urban environments. It consists of a fixed base and a cylindrical mast that oscillates perpendicular to the wind direction, connected by a carbon rod. The design leverages the natural phenomenon of aeroelastic resonance, known as Vortex Shedding, where wind passing around the structure creates pressure vortexes that cause the mast to oscillate. The device generates electricity through electromagnetic induction, similar to a traditional alternator, but without the need for a rotating shaft or gearbox.
