Let\u2019s get the ball rolling, shall we?<\/p>\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>#1- Acwa plans to ramp up Chinese investments: <\/strong>Saudi renewables giant Acwa Power is looking to increase investments in China between USD 6 bn and USD 10 bn next year, Acwa Power China CEO Yunhe Lu told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/asharqbusiness.com\/power\/62502\/%D8%A3%D9%83%D9%88%D8%A7-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%88%D8%B1-%D8%AA%D8%AA%D9%88%D9%82%D8%B9-%D8%A7%D8%B3%D8%AA%D8%AB%D9%85%D8%A7%D8%B1-10-%D9%85%D9%84%D9%8A%D8%A7%D8%B1%D8%A7%D8%AA-%D8%AF%D9%88%D9%84%D8%A7%D8%B1-%D8%A8%D8%A7%D9%84%D8%B5%D9%8A%D9%86-%D9%81%D9%8A-2025\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Asharq Business<\/a>. Acwa has already invested USD 2 bn in the country, including an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/b5f98ba2-27ab-40d6-b20c-07ec2e5d13bc\/acwa-power-inks%253cmark%253e-usd%253c%2Fmark%253e-1.8-bn-of-financing-%2B-renewables-agreements-at-fii\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">R&D partnership<\/a> with China\u2019s Lujiazui Bureau to establish a USD 54 mn (SAR 202 mn) Shanghai research center focused on the development of solar, wind, energy storage, green hydrogen, and desalination technologies.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We knew this was coming: <\/strong>Back in 2023, Acwa said it would <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e8fcf5eb-ff41-4285-b897-01edc82a813a\/acwa-power-inks-a-stack-of-agreements-with-italian-companies-to-boost-cooperation-on-green-hydrogen-and-renewables\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">kick off operations<\/a> in China this year as it expands presence in renewables-driven countries. \u201cThe push into China and other Asian markets will focus on developing desalination, green hydrogen, and renewable energy projects,\u201d CEO Marco Arcelli said at the time, adding that the company is also looking into partnerships with European countries to set up shop in the kingdom.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Acwa Power is aggressively<\/strong><strong> expanding elsewhere in Asia:<\/strong> Acwa Power signed a power purchase agreement (PPA) with Indonesia\u2019s state-owned electricity utility PT Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) for the Saguling 60 MW floating solar PV project in Indonesia <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/91dddf2b-2cdf-4ea6-bbc6-b44acc0e5ea7\/acwa-power-signs-ppa-for-floating-solar-project-in-indonesia\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last August<\/a>. The company is also very active in Central Asia, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/fe19397e-e25d-474d-9079-92e37655da13\/today:-adnoc-launches-xrg-to-invest-in-low-carbon-energy\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">considering a number of wind and solar projects<\/a> in Tajikistan and joining a consortium with Masdar and Azerbaijan\u2019s Socar to develop <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/c63ba33d-d49f-4c99-b76b-6a451a40a516\/masdar-and%253cmark%253e-acwa%253c%2Fmark%253e-take-the-lead-on-agreements-at-cop29\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">3.5 GW worth of offshore wind projects<\/a> in Azerbaijan\u2019s Caspian Sea. The company is also developing two 1 GW wind projects, one in each of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/04b6b070-a78f-4169-b38c-1992346a99df\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Uzbekistan<\/a> and <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/418cb0e3-79bc-45eb-86a8-4b3a71b29148\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Kazakhstan<\/a>. It's unknown whether the AfDB and EBRD loans were part of the count.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>About the plant: <\/strong>When operational by the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d54d21b5-58f2-46fe-aedf-da8023756c8e\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">end of 2026<\/a>, the project \u2014 developed by Acwa and Hassan Allam \u2014 is set to offset 2.2 mn tons of carbon dioxide annually and produce 4.1 TWh of power annually, enough power for nearly 1.1 mn households. The wind farm\u2019s 1.1 GW capacity will mark it as the largest wind project in both Africa and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>This isn\u2019t the only Gulf of Suez wind project:<\/strong> The Red Sea Wind Energy (RSWE) \u2014 a JV between Orascom Construction (OC), Japan\u2019s Toyota Tsusho Corporation\/Eurus Energy Holdings Corporation, and France\u2019s Engie \u2014 achieved a financial close for Ras Ghareb <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ee0bd9e5-5a07-419d-a938-0bc5902c5f39\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">wind farm<\/a> in April 2023. Later in August, Egypt\u2019s cabinet <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/8a6e9d0a-9151-414c-b5d3-ab79b1d8b440\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">approved a bid<\/a> submitted by the consortium to add 150 MW of capacity, bringing the farm\u2019s capacity to 650 MW. There are around 515 cruise ships today, up from 21 in the 1970s. France\u2019s Selar is looking to power its Captain Arctic polar expedition ship using sun, water, and wind by 2026 with an \u201calmost zero emissions\u201d design. However, smaller companies tend to be doing better on decarbonization efforts rather than the larger vessels that cause 90% of the sector\u2019s emissions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Some think LNG is the answer: <\/strong>Royal Caribbean \u2014 which uses liquefied natural gas (LNG) in its 7.6k-passenger ship Icon of the Seas \u2014 described the fuel as the \u201ccleanest burning marine fuel available\u201d and plans to capitalize on it by launching two more LNG-powered ships in 2025 and 2027. Currently, only 6.7% of cruises \u2014 19 ships \u2014 run on LNG, which will increase to 10% by 2028, the Guardian reports citing the Cruise Lines International Association. Over 15% will contain battery storage, and 15% will be able to run on methanol starting in 2025. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>But not everyone agrees: <\/strong>Environmentalists warn that LNG ships can leak methane and may also lead to 120% more \u201clife-cycle\u201d emissions than marine oil, according to the director of the International Council on Clean Transportation Bryan Comer.
