G20 has concluded without any tangible weight thrown behind finance commitments\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- COP and G20 continue to dominate the headlines this week. <\/strong>The highly-anticipated G20 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/11\/1864.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/11\/1864.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">(pdf)<\/a> contained weak language on climate, crushing COP29 leaders and negotiators\u2019 hope for a boost to stimulate the stalled process. The statement declared the group \u201ccommit to successful negotiations in Baku,\u201d but <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/83521417-f56e-4b65-965f-1072b912c30a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">failed to make any finance commitments<\/a> on thorny issues stalling COP negotiations. An explicit mention of the need to transition away from fossils was also removed from the statement, despite initial versions including the commitment. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Some think the G20\u2019s statement call for \u201ctns\u201d in climate <\/strong><strong>funding \u2014 instead of bns \u2014 is good news. <\/strong>UN climate chief Simon Stiell <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/americas\/world-looks-g20-rio-breakthrough-climate-talks-2024-11-17\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">described the statement<\/a> as sending a strong message for COP29 negotiators about the urgency of the new finance goal. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>#1- A new EV charging manufacturer is launching in Saudi: <\/strong>Saleh Suleiman Alrajhi & Sons and Hong Kong-listed <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fit-foxconn.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Foxconn Interconnect<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fit-foxconn.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Technology<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fit-foxconn.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">(FIT)<\/a> will launch a USD 100 mn joint venture to locally manufacture electric vehicle chargers in the kingdom, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sullcrom.com\/About\/News-and-Events\/Highlights\/2024\/October\/SC-Advises-Foxconn-Interconnect-Technology-Limited-Establishment-Smart-Mobility-SJSC-New-US100-Million-Joint-Venture-Saudi-Arabi\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">press release<\/a>. The study aims to lay the ground for the production of synthetic polymer silicon, polysilicon, and solar panels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- Egypt has been pursuing localization for some time: <\/strong>In June, the Egyptian government said it would launch a tender to select an international consultant tasked with developing a strategy to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1419c306-dec9-4a0d-92eb-9810a3397435\/today:-ceer-inks-major-supply-agreement-with-hyundai-%2B-uae%25e2%2580%2599s-tenderd-closes-series-a-funding-round\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">localize the manufacturing of chips and solar PV cells<\/a>, but no timeline was disclosed for the consultant selection process. The country was testing several methods for the seeding process, including using Unmanned Aerial Vehicles for atmospheric charge dispersal and cloud measurement, coupled with AI trained on data from weather models.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- <\/strong><strong>African <\/strong><strong>countries' debt trades at a high discount making the continent an <\/strong><strong>attractive location for debt-for-nature swaps,<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-11-19\/stanchart-says-debt-discounts-make-africa-ripe-for-nature-swaps?srnd=phx-green\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. African bonds yield about 120 basis points higher than those of other emerging markets, Bloomberg says, citing JP Morgan Chase data. This makes the continent\u2019s nature swaps extra attractive, where the debts are bought in secondary markets at discounted rates, clearing some savings to go for nature conservation efforts. Standard Chartered Chief Sustainability Officer Marisa Drew told Bloomberg that the continent\u2019s potential is high and lots of investors are lining up. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And a Southern Africa coast nature swap in the pipeline: <\/strong>US-based conservation nonprofit The Nature Conservancy (TNC) is exploring debt-for-nature swaps and blue bond sales to protect over 4.2k miles of southern Africa's coastline, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-11-18\/nature-conservancy-mulls-southern-africa-debt-for-nature-swaps?srnd=phx-green\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports. The financial instruments offer longer-term funding compared to traditional finance, supporting marine conservation efforts in South Africa, Namibia, and Angola. TNC has previously implemented similar swaps in Belize and Gabon, securing over USD 1 bn in total for the efforts.
