bond updates from Turkey as well as an update on Saudi\u2019s latest round of solar tenders. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><\/strong><strong><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>#1- UAE\u2019s Tadweer is investing USD 200 mn in a waste-to-energy plant in Uzbekistan <\/strong><strong>as part of a country-wide USD 1.3 bn investment push,<\/strong> according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/president.uz\/en\/lists\/view\/7627\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> by the Uzbekistani Presidential office. The plant \u2014 set to serve the Bukhara and Navoi regions \u2014 will process 1.5k tons of waste daily and generate 363 mn kWh of electricity annually. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Tadweer is not alone: <\/strong>Other companies including China\u2019s CAMC Engineering, Shanghai SUS Environment, and South Korea\u2019s Sejin are investing in similar projects across the country. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">By 2027, these projects will process 4.7 mn tons of waste annually, generating 2.1 bn kWh of electricity.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>We knew this was coming:<\/strong> Tadweer signed an agreement with Uzbekistan's Ecology, Environmental Protection, and Climate Change Ministry to establish a waste-to-energy plant and conduct feasibility studies for waste collection <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3122849f-8648-4bc2-bb67-3dcdd14d09e8\/masdar%25e2%2580%2599s-cop28-train-keeps-rolling-and-it%25e2%2580%2599s-been-a-busy-time-for-waste-management-agreements\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">last December<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><\/strong><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>#2- UAE\u2019s Masdar plans to focus its renewables efforts across the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and the US<\/strong> with a fairly equal split as it looks to increase its wind and solar capacity to 100 GW by 2030, the company\u2019s CEO Mohamed Jameel Al Ramahi told the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/1386a3e7-db11-43b6-ad07-900c401a66a3\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a> in an interview. The move would place Masdar above rivals like Spanish Iberdrola, French Engie, and German RWE.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The breakdown: <\/strong>The company sees 30-35% of its power generation coming from the Middle East, 20% from Europe, and 20-25% from the US, in addition to Asia, Al Ramahi said, adding that the company seeks an equal split between solar and wind projects.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- The Abu Dhabi-based company has been doubling down on globa<\/strong><strong>l expansion.<\/strong> Earlier this year, it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/uae\/en\/news\/story\/b9cadece-bc29-4076-b060-2ace6f101077\/masdar-snaps-up-c.-50%2525-of-spanish-solar-energy-firm\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed to acquire<\/a> a 50% stake in Spanish power firm Endesa\u2019s solar power installations subsidiary EPGE Solar for AED 3.3 bn. It also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/uae\/en\/news\/story\/efa80ef5-4810-4507-9715-23970c0aa928\/%253cmark%253emasdar%253c%2Fmark%253e-is-snapping-up%253cmark%253e-greece%253c%2Fmark%253e%25e2%2580%2599s-terna-energy\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed to acquire<\/a> Greek renewables giant Terna Energy. In the US, Masdar <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/uae\/en\/news\/story\/7949741c-a0d2-4436-bf55-3edd518bd8e6\/adnoc-seals-covestro-takeover-in-largest-investment-from-middle-east-player-in-europe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">acquired a 50% stake<\/a> in Terra-Gen, a significant player in the renewable sector. It also owns a 49% stake in the UK's Dogger Bank South project, set to be the world\u2019s largest offshore wind farm upon completion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><\/strong><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a><\/strong><strong>#3- Tunisia issues solar tender: <\/strong>Tunisia\u2019s Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy has launched requests for proposals to build 200 MW solar energy projects, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.energiemines.gov.tn\/fr\/tc\/actualites\/news\/appel-a-projets-pour-la-production-delectricite-a-partir-de-lenergie-solaire-photovoltaique-dans-l\/?tx_news_pi1%5Bcontroller%5D=News&tx_news_pi1%5Baction%5D=detail&cHash=93221a5a412c9a4ccbc21388751d7b21\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. The winners of the tenders would be required to sell the generated power to the state-owned Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company via long-term PPAs. The deadline for applications is 31 January 2025.  <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Tunisia\u2019s solar sector has been active: <\/strong>Tunisia broke ground on a TND 135 mn, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/ebf47ba1-ae32-477e-b4a6-de44abb8b9f1\/scatec-%2B-aeolus-break-break-ground-on-tozeur-solar-project-in%253cmark%253e-tunisia%253c%2Fmark%253e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">50 MW solar plant in Tozeur<\/a> developed by Norway\u2019s Scatec and Toyota subsidiary Aeolus last month. The country has set a national strategy to develop solar plants with an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gfse.at\/news\/renewable-energy-in-tunisia\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">installed capacity of 4 GW<\/a> and increase its share of renewable electricity to 35% by 2030. Tunisia also has an unconditional emissions reduction target to drop 27% \u2014 35 mn tons of CO2 \u2014 by 2030 compared to 2010 levels.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- Aramco says energy transition policies for developing nations need to be reset to balance their <\/strong><strong>goals and needs ahead of increased oil demand<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/saudi-aramco-ceo-calls-reset-energy-transition-policies-developing-nations-2024-10-21\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing comments made by Saudi Aramco CEO Amin Nasser at the Singapore International Energy Week conference. Oil demand would likely increase in the Global South, predicts Nasser, adding that \u201cmore than 100 mn barrels per day would realistically still be required by 2050.\u201d Developing countries should have a greater say in climate policy-making and should focus on improving energy efficiency and developing carbon capture technologies, he added. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ICYMI- Egypt just cut its targets again:<\/strong> Egypt <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1787561f-d13d-46a4-b6e8-2b0c76a76b94\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">revised down<\/a> its 2040 renewable energy target from 58% to 40%, setting its sights on more natural gas explorations instead. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ALSO- Increased costs of wind energy projects are also on the government's mind<\/strong>, with the Electricity and Renewable Energy Minister Mahmoud Esmat <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/almalnews.com\/%d9%88%d8%b2%d9%8a%d8%b1-%d8%a7%d9%84%d9%83%d9%87%d8%b1%d8%a8%d8%a7%d8%a1-%d9%83%d9%84-%d8%a3%d9%84%d9%81-%d9%85%d9%8a%d8%ac%d8%a7%d9%88%d8%a7%d8%aa-%d9%85%d9%86-%d8%b7%d8%a7%d9%82%d8%a9-%d8%a7\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">saying<\/a> that the country needs investments of nearly USD 1 bn to generate 1 GW of electricity from wind energy, significantly higher than the USD 600 mn required for solar energy. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#5- Hedge funds are betting against green energy sectors despite global efforts to <\/strong><strong>promote clean energy,<\/strong> <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/graphics\/2024-hedge-funds-climate-change-green-energy-stocks\/?srnd=phx-green\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports, citing data disclosed by around 500 hedge funds to Hazeltree. Stocks in sectors like batteries, solar, electric vehicles, and hydrogen are increasingly becoming targets for shorting bets, whereas fossils and coal are seeing net favorable bets. The S&P Global Clean Energy Index has lost around 60% of its value since its 2021 high, while S&P\u2019s Global Oil Index took off by over 50%. This trend has persisted despite substantial green stimulus packages in the US, Europe, and China. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.1500000000000001;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The reasoning: <\/strong>Hedge fund managers cite several reasons for their cautious stance on green investments. The dominance of China in the green tech supply chain, coupled with the risk of trade wars, has made investments in sectors like solar and EVs less appealing. Additionally, higher interest rates have made capital-intensive projects like offshore wind farms less viable. Born from an ambition to sustainably prop up food security, Abdullah Elfandi launched aquaponics farm <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/web.facebook.com\/people\/HydroHarvest\/61556256645325\/?mibextid=LQQJ4d&amp;rdid=duuNMX6kD7FOCSa0&amp;share_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fshare%2F6nAs9Ji9CcFUcH1Y%2F%3Fmibextid%3DLQQJ4d&amp;_rdc=1&amp;_rdr\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">HydroHarvest<\/a> this year to sustainably grow vegetables and breed fish using minimal water and local resources. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Success in a short spell:<\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> HydroHarvest has been operating for about six months and has produced approximately 3k kg of vegetables including lettuces, arugula, mint, basil, and kale, Elfandi told EnterpriseAM Climate. The farm has also bred and produced nearly 1k to 1.5k kg of fish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Reuse, repeat: <\/strong>\"The organic fish sludge waste from our operations is used to fertilize the land-grown crops. We use no chemicals whatsoever \u2014 it's 100% organic, clean production,\" Elfandi told us. After filling the irrigation system with 400k liters of water, there\u2019s barely a need to add more water due to minimal evaporation and absorption by the crops thanks to efficient water retention. This approach not only conserves water but also reduces plastic waste associated with traditional farming as it eliminates the waste from disposable packaging of pesticides and chemicals.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>More to come: <\/strong>HydroHarvest expects to produce about five tons of tilapia fish annually and about 40 tons of vegetables once it reaches its optimal production rate, Elfandi said. In this system, fish waste is converted into nutrients for the plants, which in turn filter and purify the water, providing a healthier environment for the fish. The outcome is efficient water use and waste management and less dependence on chemical fertilizers compared to conventional farming. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Looking ahead: <\/strong>As the world faces a finite supply of oil and increasing resource scarcity, technologies like aquaponics will become indispensable for food production, Elfandi predicts. \u201cYou can't run an oil-based economy forever,\u201d he said, \u201cThis leaves us with limited options \u2026 You either grow your crops hydroponically, aquaponically, or die from hunger and famine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The region is active in the aquaponics field: <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/bustanaquaponics.com\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bustan Aquaponics<\/a>, founded in 2011, is Egypt\u2019s first commercial aquaponics farm.
