First, some green news from the ride-hailing giant Uber\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY <\/strong><strong>OUTSIDE THE REGION-<\/strong> <strong>Uber Green goes even greener: <\/strong>Uber\u2019s Uber Green service \u2014 previously a hybrid and EV ridesharing product at an extra fee \u2014 is going fully electric in 40 cities, including some in the US, Australia, and New Zealand, and all French cities. The company also pledged USD 800 mn to support its EV transition by 2040, encouraging governments to do more to incentivize EV supply as well as demand, Uber said. Around 180k Uber drivers are currently using EVs in the US, Canada, and Europe. Customers next year will have the EV-first preference, which \u2018automatically matches\u2019 users with an EV if one is around. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Uber has big green goals: <\/strong>Uber has pledged to go carbon neutral in North America and Europe by 2030, and in all global markets by 2040. The first phase of the USD 800 mn, 500 MW project will have a 250 MW capacity, and the second phase will be operational by July 2025.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER \u2013 The company is expanding in Egypt<\/strong>: Adding to its portfolio of <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/60cb557d-fe08-4da8-9a40-1c844ee88882\/today:-acwa-power-is-selling-down-its-stake-in-uzbek-wind-projects-%2B-what-happened-to-esg%3F\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">1 GW worth of renewable energy projects<\/a>, including the 500 MW solar plant in Abydos, alongside the Ras Ghareb farm, the company received approval from the Egyptian cabinet in July to expand its renewable energy projects in the country by the summer of 2025. Last September, the company <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/edition\/climate\/592fa297-b195-4c07-851a-b16650563c08\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">secured<\/a> two landmark projects in Egypt, inking power purchase agreements to develop and expand solar and battery energy storage system projects in Egypt. The company said it would pour USD 800 mn in investments into the two projects, which together can power some 769k homes in Egypt, cutting carbon emissions by 2.3 mn tons per year. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>#2- China is oversupplying lithium to the global market to cause a \u201cpredatory\u201d price drop <\/strong><strong>and eliminate competitors<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/commodities\/china-is-oversupplying-lithium-eliminate-rivals-us-official-says-2024-10-08\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing comments made by US under secretary of economic growth Jose Fernandez. Chinese producers of the metal have also felt the impacts of the plummeting prices, forcing some to temporarily halt production at certain mines, the newswire writes. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Portugal is also taking a hit: <\/strong>Lithium producers across the globe have had to scale back production and initiate layoffs, including in Portugal, which holds around 60k tons of reserves and is Europe\u2019s biggest source of the metal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#3- Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) prices could fall by as much as 76% \u2013\u2013 from USD 46 <\/strong><strong>per MWh to USD 11 per MWh \u2013\u2013 between 2023 and 2050<\/strong>, according to a new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.woodmac.com\/press-releases\/rec-apac-2024\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by Wood Mackenzie. The projections are based on a predicted surplus in the REC market due to a fourfold increase in renewable power generation across six Asia Pacific markets: Taiwan Region, South Korea, Australia, India, China, and Japan.
