First, a boost of investor confidence in Europe's offshore wind sector\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>A big wind acquisition: <\/strong>Norway\u2019s biggest oil and gas company Equinor has acquired a USD 2.5 bn 9.8% stake in Danish wind energy giant Orsted. Orsted has been <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/d462fb7d-8dd5-4d25-8151-f04611f7ddc5\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">struggling<\/a> over the last year, having recorded USD bns of write-downs due to problems with offshore wind projects in the US. The equity purchase agreement triggered an 8% jump in Orsted shares. The EDF consortium also signed a sub-usufruct agreement for a 341 sqkm bloc of land in Dhofar to be allocated for the development of the newly signed project for a period of 47 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>About the project: <\/strong>The project, part of Oman's green hydrogen initiative, will <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4a1ec8c3-0eb6-49d1-a92a-3ac403230a2c\/oman-taps-two-winning-consortiums-in-second-green-hydrogen-auction\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">include<\/a> 4.5 GW of wind and solar stations coupled with battery storage and a 2.5 GW electrolyzer, with the aim of producing 178k tons per year of green hydrogen by 2030.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>#3- BP has backtracked <\/strong><strong>on its ambitious<\/strong><strong> goal<\/strong><strong> to slash oil output by 40% before 2030<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/energy\/bp-drops-oil-output-target-strategy-reset-sources-say-2024-10-07\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing three sources with knowledge to the matter. Investors\u2019 skepticism about the profitability of the company under its ambitious transition strategy has been building up for some time. Last February, the company downgraded its target to 25% before dropping it altogether. Most recently, last July, BP <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6efbc0be-16ad-45d7-b046-fd73c9682714\/today:-fertiglobe-secures-eur-397-mn-offtake-agreement-from-germany%25e2%2580%2599s-h2global\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">paused development<\/a> on new offshore wind projects.Despite abandoning the ambitious goal, BP\u2019s net zero 2050 target is still intact. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#4- India is moving to fill the void left by China <\/strong><strong>in US solar<\/strong><strong> market<\/strong>, the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/78f52ebd-13ba-4a38-843a-c156f2415e8b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a> reports. \u201cIndia can actually become that plus one to China as far as the green tech supply chain is concerned\u201d due to the need for diversification, India\u2019s ReNew CEO Sumant Sinha told FT. US\u2019 heightened crackdown on Chinese solar input producers is creating an avenue for producers as US-based companies look for other suppliers. Manufacturing beyond China and its associated Southeast Asian hubs is set to double, and India can pick up to 40% of the new capacity, Wood Mckenzie predicts. US imports of Indian solar panels ballooned to USD 1.8 bn from USD 250 mn just in the previous year, according to BloombergNEF data. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>#5- Increasing data center energy and operational efficiency could save USD 27.6 bn <\/strong><strong>by 2030, <\/strong>according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/10\/499.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a> prepared by Atlantic Ventures. Incorporating hyperconverged infrastructure (HCI) solutions would optimize data centers to reduce 19 mn tons of CO2 in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. A switch to an HCI-based platform can result in a 27% reduction in needed energy, while a complete transition could save up to 92 TWh of electricity. HCI technology also helps optimize disaster recovery which is more challenging in traditional cloud solutions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>What is <\/strong><strong>HCI<\/strong><strong>? <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nutanix.com\/hyperconverged-infrastructure\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">HCI<\/a> combines servers and storage into one distributed infrastructure platform to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce<\/a> the number of physical machines required in data centers. The technology is credited with its flexibility, energy efficiency, and localization potential as opposed to traditional infrastructure, which is composed of separate servers, storage networks, and arrays that is known to be energy-intensive and have several pain points.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- Data centers guzzle energy: <\/strong>Electricity consumption for data centers \u2014 facilities composed of networked computers, computing infrastructure, and storage systems \u2014 is expected to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/0737ec04-cf2f-4ee5-9c9d-b2c29297fc45\/us-based-startup-exowatt-tackles-the-energy-intensive%253cmark%253e-data-center%253c%2Fmark%253e-sector\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">double by 2026<\/a>. The growing demand for electricity is also evident in global tech giants\u2019 emissions, with Google\u2019s emissions surging nearly 50% in five years due to AI energy demand. US tech company Microsoft also reported a 30% increase in carbon emissions since 2020 driven by its AI investments. Data from September also revealed that data center emissions were likely <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5dacdeb1-572c-46a2-8cd0-0ca68dbef8d2\/today:-lots-of-saudi-news-%2B-alterra-caps-returns-to-attract-global-capital\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">662% higher<\/a> than officially reported between 2020 to 2022. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">DANGER ZONE- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>2023 recorded as driest year in over three decades for rivers with 3.6 bn people lacking <\/strong><strong>adequate access to water at least one month per year, <\/strong>according to a UN World Meteorological Organization (WMO) <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/10\/567.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a>. News of the firm\u2019s launch is expected as early as this month, sources say. Saudi Aramco is said to be a co-investor in the new company, although the size of its contributions is unknown.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Saudi has big green hydrogen plans: <\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The Kingdom\u2019s USD 8.4 bn green hydrogen plant at Neom is set to reach full capacity <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/a5369729-376c-4e02-b677-1dbf3a76e1ff\" rel=\"noopener\">by the end of 2026<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">. The Neom Green Hydrogen Company reached financial close with financing from 23 local, regional, and international banks and financial institutions <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/3b430e5e-0bba-4e79-b49f-6b1a0240542d\" rel=\"noopener\">back in May 2023<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>More about the plant: <\/strong>The mega facility will produce up to 600 tons of green hydrogen per day, with the capacity to produce 1.2 mn tons of green ammonia annually. The plant will source its power needs from up to 4 GW of solar and wind energy. US-based Air Products secured an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/667db3a4-e073-4568-bb2e-5ea77b26e032\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">exclusive 30-year off-take agreement<\/a> for all the green ammonia produced at the plant.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Blue hydrogen is also on the cards: <\/strong>The Kingdom is looking to establish a global presence in blue hydrogen production as well, with a goal of eventually supplying 15% of the world\u2019s blue hydrogen volumes, PIF Governor and Aramco Chairman Yasir Al Rumayyan said <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spa.gov.sa\/en\/N2052820\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">back in February<\/a>.
