The big news of the day is speculation emerging on a sizable Acwa investment in Turkey\u2019s green energy sector. Shall we get the ball rolling?<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- <\/strong><strong>There\u2019s no single story dominating the headlines<\/strong>, but China\u2019s outbound investment reaching record levels despite the global FDI slowdown is grabbing some ink. China\u2019s outbound investment has reached record levels since last year as the country continues to set up offshore renewable energy component manufacturing facilities to evade Western tariffs, according to a new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/10\/176.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a>. Chinese companies have allocated USD 109.2 bn in outbound FDI across 130 clean technology transactions since 2023. The country is shifting focus to advanced manufacturing in a bid to help its slowing economy gain momentum by moving away from property and infrastructure investment. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s clear which investments took the lead: <\/strong>China\u2019s 40 biggest cleantech transactions were largely in EVs and EV batteries, hydropower, solar and wind energy, and electricity transmissions, the report added. The country\u2019s investments created new manufacturing hubs in countries including Thailand, Indonesia, Brazil, Hungary, and Morocco. The floods, the worst in the region\u2019s recorded history, have battered the region, leaving 24 fatalities and widespread destruction across Poland, Czechia, Austria, Romania, Hungary, Germany, and Slovakia.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">A s<\/strong><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">ilver lining? <\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">While the event is the worst that the region has seen to date, Europe\u2019s investment in early warning systems and improved forecasting has improved the continent\u2019s response, according to WWA. Though severe, these floods had a significantly lower death toll compared to the region\u2019s most recent major floods of 2021, which left over 200 people dead. Still more needs to be done to limit casualties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The rest of the world is also at high risk<\/strong><strong>:<\/strong> \u201cCatastrophic rainfall\" is in line with predictions as global temperatures rise, Joyce Kimutai from Imperial College London's Grantham told the Guardian. In a low emissions scenario, the global rate of both coastal flooding and flooding by rainfall are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/7b09dee9-b084-4ce9-a6e0-b96a83077b52\/acwa-power-breaks-ground-on-200-mw-wind-plant-%2B-100-mw-battery-station-in-uzbekistan\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">predicted to increase<\/a> by 99% and 6%, respectively by 2100. The largest future increases in flooding are forecast to be around the world\u2019s coastlines including North Africa, as well as in Africa and Asia where rainfall-induced floods are more common.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>MENA is really feeling the effects:<\/strong> Scientists <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/4f77f553-a8bf-45b7-8a9d-1098260d5bb3\/today:-world-future-energy-summit-recap-%2B-xlinks-interconnector-project-got-a-lot-pricier\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">found<\/a> that climate change, which causes warm air to hold more moisture and can lead to heavier rainfall, was the culprit behind the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/86181c14-d257-4ee0-be94-cc4786f751e0\/today:-acwa-secures-more-financing-for-uzbek-solar-%2B-uae%25e2%2580%2599s-taqa-might-takeover-spain%25e2%2580%2599s-naturgy\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">recent severe floods in the UAE<\/a>, in which a year\u2019s worth of rain fell over the country in one day. Morocco was hit by rare and deadly <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lemonde.fr\/en\/le-monde-africa\/article\/2024\/09\/11\/people-have-never-seen-anything-like-it-morocco-hit-by-extraordinary-torrential-rains_6725563_124.html#\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">torrential rains<\/a> in early September, leading to the deaths of 18 people. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Morocco\u2019s growing vulnerability from droughts and floods are <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/850d7ada-2a66-4893-8021-3e23299b414b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">exacerbating risks<\/a><\/strong><strong> to its economy and banking sector<\/strong>, a World Bank <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ent.news\/2024\/4\/1299.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report (pdf)<\/a> warns. Pluvial flooding could cause GDP losses ranging from USD 9 bn to USD 10.8 bn by 2050 depending on its severity. Floods can further impact the banking sector by decreasing the value of assets like properties and mortgage loans and disrupting essential infrastructure, such as roads and communication networks, leading to economic losses in sectors like transport, tourism, and agriculture. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The world needs better flood prevention: <\/strong>Given that <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/topics\/ocean-seas-and-coasts\/regional-seas-programme\/coastal-zone-management\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">around 37%<\/a> of the global population resides in coastal areas within 100 km of the ocean, the expected annual flood damage globally could increase by USD 16.2 bn to USD 44.5 bn per year during 2020\u20132100 under low- and high-emissions scenarios, respectively, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007\/s11069-023-06017-7\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">study<\/a> published in Springer. Over <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/RegData\/etudes\/BRIE\/2021\/698753\/EPRS_BRI(2021)698753_EN.pdf\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">376 mn people<\/a> have <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5d9c6a84-d037-44e2-a787-cccfdfdf744c\/climate-change-is-the-culprit-behind-the-displacement-of-mns-of-refugees\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">been displaced globally<\/a> since 2008 due to extreme weather, including 32.6 mn in 2022 alone \u2014 equating to one person displaced every second or the entirety of Australia being pushed out of their homes every year.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Enter floating buildings:<\/strong> Floating structures are <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/82c5a18f-3bef-4bbd-9d05-3a3f097f4d26\/floating-buildings-can-help-overcome-flood-damage\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">gaining traction<\/a> as a viable and sustainable method of preventing flood damage. The structures are designed to adapt to fluctuating water levels and offer a sustainable and eco-friendly lifestyle while enhancing climate resilience.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Our region is hopping on the bandwagon: <\/strong>UAE\u2019s startup <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/floating-man.com\/en\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Floating Man<\/a>, which <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/82c5a18f-3bef-4bbd-9d05-3a3f097f4d26\/floating-buildings-can-help-overcome-flood-damage\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">specializes in floating structures<\/a> including floating solar and battery energy storage system stations, is also introducing floodproof villas and houses to combat the impact of floods. The UAE also implemented an <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thenationalnews.com\/news\/uae\/2024\/09\/04\/this-will-save-lives-how-the-uaes-early-weather-system-aims-to-combat-climate-threat\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">early weather warning system<\/a> last month to help identify impending extreme weather events, such as floods.
