An average of just seven butterflies per 15-minute count were recorded by participants in this summer\u2019s butterfly count, with eight out of the 10 most-seen species in serious decline. The UAE plans to invest more than USD 50 bn in renewable and clean energy over the next six years, building on the USD 45 bn already invested in the past 15 years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt3\"><\/a>China is calling on Germany to help support a diplomatic solution to EU\u2019s imposition of <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1419c306-dec9-4a0d-92eb-9810a3397435\/today:-ceer-inks-major-supply-agreement-with-hyundai-%2B-uae%25e2%2580%2599s-tenderd-closes-series-a-funding-round\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EV tariffs<\/a><\/strong><strong> on Chinese imports<\/strong>, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/ev-tariffs-will-cause-damage-germany-china-says-chinese-commerce-minister-2024-09-17\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing statements from China\u2019s Commerce Minister Wang Wentao. China hopes to reach a solution in line with World Trade Organisation rules with Germany\u2019s support in a bid to resolve the dispute, he told German Vice Chancellor and Economic Minister Robert Habeck and Head of the German Chancellery Wolfgang Schmidt during his visit to Europe. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- There has been some compromise: <\/strong>Earlier this month, the EU said it would <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/32b9dd41-d894-4f3f-a5c6-e20bb546a487\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">reduce proposed final tariffs<\/a> to be imposed on Chinese-made EVs imported by Tesla and other electric vehicle manufacturers. The proposed levies of up to 36.8% will be subject to a vote by the EU\u2019s 27 states before they come into force in November. They will be applied unless a qualified majority of 15 EU members vote against the implementation of the duties.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>ON A RELATED NOTE- <\/strong><strong>China\u2019s <\/strong><strong>dominance in the green technology market is mainly due <\/strong><strong>to substantial state support which has left the US playing catch up<\/strong>, Former US Vice President Al Gore told <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/8bbd7162-17f8-4b3e-8d50-aad2682fb301\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">The Financial Times<\/a>. Despite the US's recent efforts to boost the green industry through the Inflation Reduction Act, it still lags behind China and the EU in shifting investments away from fossil fuels. Gore expressed optimism that the US's investment ratio would improve but stressed the need for a balanced approach that addresses both trade fairness and the acceleration of adopting green energy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The trade war is making things worse: <\/strong>Gore also criticized the Biden administration's approach of imposing hefty tariffs on Chinese clean tech products, arguing that it may not be the most effective response. He pointed out that while China has scaled back some green subsidies, significant state support remains, exemplified by the USD 1.8 bn in subsidies received by BYD, China's largest EV maker, in 2022. This support has enabled China to invest heavily in clean energy, outpacing the US in the ratio of clean energy to fossil fuel investments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">THE SCORECARD- <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The <\/strong><strong>Middle <\/strong><strong>East is set to receive a boost in renewable energy investments with USD <\/strong><strong>75.63 bn allocated for 116 projects by 2030, <\/strong>according to a new <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.the-eic.com\/MediaCentre\/Detail?articleId=1923\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by the Energy Industries Council. The projects include solar power, onshore wind, hydro, hydrogen production, carbon capture utilization and storage (CCUS), geothermal energy, and battery and energy storage systems. Critics viewed the provision \u2014 along with the call to accelerate carbon capture \u2014 as evidence of \u201cthe influence of petrostates in the half measures and loopholes included in the final agreement,\u201d US vice president Al Gore <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/algore\/status\/1734853205014557029\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> at the time. \u201cThe resolution is marred by loopholes that offer the fossil fuel industry numerous escape routes, relying on unproven, unsafe technologies,\u201d the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/harjeet11\/status\/1734836453912236489?s=20\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Climate Action Network<\/a> echoed the sentiment. <\/p>\n<p style=\"border-right-style:solid;border-top-width:0pt;border-left-style:solid;orphans:2;text-align:left;padding:0;margin:0;border-right-width:0pt;line-height:1.15;border-left-width:0pt;border-top-style:solid;border-bottom-width:0pt;border-bottom-style:solid;widows:2\"><strong>REMEMBER- The final draft included eight actions to reach the 1.5C goal including: <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Tripling renewable energy capacity globally and doubling the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030;<\/li>\n<li>Rapidly phasing down unabated coal and limitations on permitting new and unabated coal power generation;<\/li>\n<li>Accelerating zero and low emissions technologies, including, inter alia, renewables, nuclear, abatement and removal technologies, including such as carbon capture and utilization and storage, and low carbon hydrogen production, so as to enhance efforts towards substitution of unabated fossil fuels in energy systems.<\/li>\n<li>Reducing both consumption and production of fossil fuels, in a just, orderly and equitable manner so as to achieve net zero by, before, or around 2050 in keeping with the science;<\/li>\n<li>Accelerating emissions reductions from road transport through a range of pathways, including the development of infrastructure and rapid deployment of zero and low-emission vehicles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">CLIMATE FINANCE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The loss and damage fund was launched: <\/strong>Some 200 countries signed off on <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/71017814-88a9-452e-870e-3bae48d2dd38\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">operationalizing the loss and damage fund<\/a> established at COP27. The fund is set up to finance adaptation and mitigation efforts in climate vulnerable countries facing hurricanes, floods, droughts, and rising sea levels. UAE pledged to contribute USD 100 mn into the fund, despite some countries pushing for developed countries to shoulder the responsibility given its historical role in emission production. Germany, the UK, Japan, and the US also made initial contributions, standing at USD 100 mn, GBP 40 (c. The new target would increase the bank\u2019s climate-focused financing by 10% reaching 45% of the bank\u2019s total lending volume for FY2024\/2025. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The UAE banking sector earmarked over AED 1 tn in climate finance by 2030:<\/strong> The UAE\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.uaebf.ae\/en\/index\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">National Banks Federation<\/a> (NBF) \u2014 made up of 56 UAE-based lenders \u2014 committed to mobilizing AED 1 tn in green funding by the end of the decade to help meet the UAE\u2019s 2050 net-zero target.
