First, a quick update on the China-EU trade quarrel\u2026<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>THE BIG CLIMATE STORY OUTSIDE THE REGION- There\u2019s no single story shaping <\/strong><strong>the conversation this morning<\/strong>, but the European Union is set to reduce <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/673ef256-0b66-4d33-894e-9108d621709a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">proposed final tariffs<\/a> to be imposed on Chinese-made EVs imported by Tesla and other electric vehicle manufacturers, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/europe\/eu-lower-proposed-tariffs-tesla-other-evs-china-bloomberg-news-reports-2024-09-10\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a> reports, citing a source with knowledge of the matter. Tesla will see its proposed tariff reduced to 7.8% from 9%, while Geely could incur a lower 18.8% levy instead of 19.3%. BYD will see no change to its proposed 17% tariff, while a tariff rate of 35.3% would be applied to SAIC and other companies deemed uncooperative with the bloc\u2019s anti-subsidy investigation. Last month, Canada said it <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e0374f28-02a6-4ec9-ba88-a586b8a8684c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">will impose<\/a> a 100% tariff on Chinese EVs and a 25% tariff on Chinese steel and aluminum from 1 October, mirroring a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/817b4a75-e1ec-4ee1-9fc5-7d43042419f6\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">similar move<\/a> by the US and the EU. The transaction is expected to close in 2025, subject to regulatory and shareholder approvals. Researchers found that 52 mn tons of plastic waste entered the environment in 2020 after they used artificial intelligence to assess the growing crisis in a new detailed assessment. Two-thirds of the world\u2019s plastic pollution came as a result of uncollected rubbish from 1.2 bn people lacking access to waste collection services.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The study singled out the top polluters: <\/strong>India replaced China as the world\u2019s top plastic pollution hotspot with 9.3 mn tons \u2014 representing one fifth of the world\u2019s total plastic pollution \u2014 due to its large population and lack of waste collection services. Such a loss of sea ice could take decades for the Antarctic ecosystem to recover from. During increased ocean stress, especially during the 2015-2016 El Ni\u00f1o phenomenon, the sharks spent less time on the reefs and took up to 16 months to return to their normal habitat. However, some sharks stayed longer on healthier reefs, suggesting that protecting these areas from human damage could help retain shark populations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>It\u2019s getting hot in here: <\/strong>Sharks are cold-blooded with their body temperature linked to water temperature. \u201cIf it gets too hot, they\u2019re going to need to move,\u201d research lead David Jacoby told the Guardian. \u201cWe think many are choosing to move into offshore, deeper and cooler waters, which is concerning.
