single story shaping <\/strong><strong>the conversation this morning<\/strong>, but Swedish battery developer Northvolt is set to cut costs with layoffs and unit sales amid a slower growth in EV demand, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/northvolt.com\/articles\/northvolt-strategic-review\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>. Northvolt said following a strategic review that its focus on sustainable large-scale cell manufacturing would require changes to the size of its workforce. \u201cNo final decisions have been made on the precise nature of any resizing,\u201d the company said, saying it aims to \u201censure that every effort is made to minimize the need for redundancies.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>A scale back on expansion: <\/strong>Northvolt said it plans to place operations at its Northvolt Ett Upstream 1 cathode active material production facility in Sweden \u201cinto care and maintenance until further notice.\u201d It also said it will enter talks with future investors to capitalize the production of battery systems and packs in Poland. It also plans to integrate its California-based subsidiary Cuberg into its operations in Sweden. <strong>The story grabbed ink in <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/technology\/northvolt-cut-costs-explore-strategic-partnerships-2024-09-09\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Reuters<\/a><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-09-09\/northvolt-to-pause-some-production-cut-staff-amid-ev-slowdown\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a><\/strong><strong>, <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/df16b3c0-92f8-4b72-abfb-22a7eca03953\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Financial Times<\/a><\/strong><strong>, and <\/strong><strong><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/09\/09\/northvolt-to-cut-costs-explore-strategic-partnerships.html\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">CNBC<\/a><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<hr style=\"height:2px;border-width:0;color:gray;background-color:gray\">\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\">\n<p class=\"tag-border-left\">WATCH THIS SPACE-<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><a id=\"wwtt1\"><\/a><strong>#1- <\/strong><strong>Qatar <\/strong><strong>Investment Authority (QIA) is reportedly seeking the Spanish government\u2019s <\/strong><strong>approval to increase its stake in Spanish utility provider Iberdrola to over 10%<\/strong>, up from the current 8.7% shareholding by the Qatari sovereign wealth fund, Spanish news outlet <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/okdiario.com\/economia\/qatar-quiere-subir-participacion-iberdrola-pedira-permiso-gobierno-pasar-del-10-13402658\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Okdario<\/a> reported. No further details were provided on the talks, but Okdiario is suggesting that the QIA wants to be a part of the decision making by the Spanish firm.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>QIA and Iberdrola go way back: <\/strong>The QIA\u2019s direct investment arm Qatar Holding became Iberdrola\u2019s largest shareholder in 2011 after it acquired a 6.2% stake valued at EUR 2.2 bn the company. It has since upped its shareholding in Iberdrola. QIA also invested USD 740 mn <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iberdrola.com\/press-room\/news\/detail\/avangrid-iberdrola-s-controlled-subsidiary-u-s--issued-capital-increase-4-000-million\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">in 2021<\/a> to acquire c. 3.7% of common stock issued by Avangrid \u2014 Iberdrola\u2019s controlled subsidiary in the US.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>The two partnered on the energy transition in Qatar:<\/strong> Iberdrola and QIA <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.iberdrola.com\/press-room\/news\/detail\/iberdrola-qatar-sign-agreement-to-strengthen-strategic-alliance-innovation\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">partnered in 2022<\/a> to advance the digitalisation of Qatar's electricity sector through the Iberdrola Innovation Middle East center in Doha. The collaboration aimed to enhance solutions in both public and private sectors, focusing on smart grids, renewable energy integration, and energy efficiency.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- QIA is boosting its green portfolio: <\/strong>QIA \u2014 which landed a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/84e0a9f7-dfab-488e-9739-1dd9de03877a\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 5 bn loan<\/a> for green investments in late 2022 \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/528d2374-fdc9-4988-b028-ab6559249d5b\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">acquired a 2.7% stake<\/a> in India\u2019s Adani Green Energy for c. USD 474 mn in a block transaction last year. It also invested <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/d26e3e11-d63e-49eb-8c4b-9cd96ab41746\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EUR 2.4 bn<\/a> in German utilities provider RWE in a debt-to-equity swap to own 9.09% of RWE and led a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/7f08c548-f1f0-4af6-b4af-89e38536c013\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EUR 250 mn series D investment round<\/a> for Paris-based biotech company Innovafeed in 2022. More recently, QIA invested <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/65ed1e50-2de7-4d1e-81ab-16c3a5bb9700\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">USD 180 mn<\/a> in Dublin-based critical minerals investment company TechMet last month.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong><a id=\"wwtt2\"><\/a>#2- China to expand carbon market to steel, aluminum, and cement by year-end: <\/strong>China is set to expand its carbon trading market to include steel, aluminum, and cement industries by the end of 2024, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2024-09-09\/china-to-add-steel-aluminum-and-cement-to-carbon-market-in-2024?srnd=green\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Bloomberg<\/a> reports, citing statements by China\u2019s Ecology and Environment Minister Huang Runqiu. The move comes under efforts by Beijing to help producers of those industries handle the incoming Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) from the EU starting 2026. The plan sees the addition of seven more sectors to the country\u2019s three-year carbon market \u2014 which currently covers about 2.2k power utilities \u2014 to help China cover 70% of its total emissions by 2030. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- CBAM is the world\u2019s first CO2 border tax: <\/strong>The EU <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/dac41906-1485-42fe-b103-9d11a851945c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">launched the first phase<\/a> of the world\u2019s first carbon border tax last year, requiring importers to report emissions from products sold in Europe or risk fines. The CO2 levy will require firms importing steel, cement, aluminum, electricity, fertilizers, and hydrogen into the EU to report CO2 emitted during manufacturing, and eventually charging pollution fees on those products by 2026. The fertilizers needed for wheat production contribute nearly half of the emissions from the production of a loaf of bread, Holsether said. Decarbonizing the process is easy but needs financial support from governments to make green fertilizers financially attractive as the current market conditions make it challenging.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Yara is leading the efforts in the push for green fertilizers: <\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">Yara International is addressing the issue with green fertilizer initiatives, including the opening of Europe\u2019s <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/fc98b3dd-5ec3-4f45-b96b-d845a8d06b11\" rel=\"noopener\">largest green hydrogen and ammonia plant<\/a><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\"> in Norway, Holsether said. Many green hydrogen projects have been shelved, with less than a third expected to be operational by the end of the decade.
