Debby was located about 65 miles (104.6 kms) west-northwest of Dry Tortugas National Park and 230 miles (370.1 kms) south-southwest of Tampa city, moving northwest at 14 m\/h (22.5 kms\/h) with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph (72.4 kms\/h) early on Sunday. The act \u2014 dubbed the American Tax USD for American Solar Manufacturing Act \u2014 comes just as Chinese companies set up factories in the US with support from US President Joe Biden\u2019s Inflation Reduction Act which was introduced in 2022. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER- The West has been cracking down on Chinese EV imports: <\/strong>The US went on the offensive in the brewing trade war with China by announcing in May a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/817b4a75-e1ec-4ee1-9fc5-7d43042419f6\/\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">slew of tariffs<\/a> on Chinese imports. Tariffs on Chinese EVs quadrupled to 100%, those on lithium-ion EV batteries to more than triple to 25%, those on solar cells to double to 50%. green methanol, according to a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/masdar.ae\/en\/news\/newsroom\/masdar-and-totalenergies-to-develop-a-commercial-green-hydrogen\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a> released on Thursday. <\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong style=\"background-color: transparent;\">What we know: <\/strong><span style=\"background-color: transparent;\">The project will focus on decarbonizing \u201chard to abate, emission intensive sectors\u201d including aviation and maritime industries, according to the statement. It will aim to use captured CO2 from industrial sources and green hydrogen as a feedstock to produce green methanol and SAF.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Building on prior agreements:<\/strong> The agreement follows a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/1f26c512-0555-49d7-a1e4-dcd387ac5afe\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">successful test flight<\/a> during COP28 by a consortium comprising Masdar, TotalEnergies, Airbus, Axens, and Falcon Aviation Services demonstrating the potential for converting methanol to SAF. The UAE General Civil Aviation Authority worked with the companies on the pilot flight.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>Why this matters: <\/strong>Methanol isn't among the alcohols in the <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.energyfuels.3c01805#:~:text=Abstract-,Alcohol%2Dto%2DJet%20Synthetic%20Paraffinic%20Kerosene%20(AtJ%2DSPK,to%20describe%20its%20combustion%20behavior.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Alcohol-to-Jet Synthetic Paraffinic<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pubs.acs.org\/doi\/abs\/10.1021\/acs.energyfuels.3c01805#:~:text=Abstract-,Alcohol%2Dto%2DJet%20Synthetic%20Paraffinic%20Kerosene%20(AtJ%2DSPK,to%20describe%20its%20combustion%20behavior.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">Kerosene pathway<\/a> which was certified in 2016 as meeting international standards for jet fuel. However, the flight used an SAF blend made from <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.chemicalsafetyfacts.org\/chemicals\/olefins\/#:~:text=Olefins%20are%20a%20class%20of,butadiene%20are%20examples%20of%20olefins.\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">olefins<\/a>, which can bypass the restrictions for obtaining the certificate. This new method can eventually allow for SAF to be produced from renewables (eSAF).<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>REMEMBER-<\/strong><strong> Masdar has big SAF plans:<\/strong> Masdar <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/e8230c15-8513-4dcd-9dbe-67e14f8bcd8c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an agreement<\/a> with Airbus to jointly develop sustainable aviation fuels last year. The company also partnered with France\u2019s Hy24-managed Clean Hydrogen Infrastructure Fund to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/26abd520-5946-4238-83f9-ecedd0d5060c\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">boost large-scale green hydrogen production projects<\/a> globally under efforts to set up a clean energy production value chain from renewables, to green hydrogen and its derivatives including green ammonia, e-methanol, sustainable aviation fuel, and liquid hydrogen. Masdar also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5d5aa6c9-4c51-43ae-b76b-77446ea36e08\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">signed an MoU<\/a> with US aircraft maker Boeing to advance and support the development and adoption of SAF policies and projects locally and abroad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And so does TotalEnergies: <\/strong>Satorp \u2014 a JV between Saudi oil giant Aramco and TotalEnergies \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/6bbd48a5-1a5b-45d0-ba5d-db9293efcfce\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">successfully converted<\/a> cooking oil into SAF last November. The project will contribute to TotalEnergies\u2019 goal of producing 1.5 mT of SAF annually by 2030. It also <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/5448d27d-19e5-4087-8d4c-dccad3d99926\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">helped deliver<\/a> with Adnoc the world\u2019s first ever certified bulk commercial shipment of low-carbon ammonia using carbon capture and storage to Mitsui.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding:0;margin:0;line-height:1.15;orphans:2;widows:2;text-align:left\"><strong>And that\u2019s not all:<\/strong> Fertiglobe also secured a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/enterprise.news\/climate\/en\/news\/story\/f5abf384-29b6-40d9-bc15-0d60974a882e\" style=\"\" rel=\"noopener\">EUR 397 offtake agreemen<\/a> t from the German government\u2019s first-of-its-kind H2Global program to supply green ammonia to the EU from its Egyptian facilities between 2027 and 2033 following an auction. Fertiglobe said such an agreement would help it and the consortium behind Egypt Green Hydrogen reach a FID on Africa\u2019s first integrated green hydrogen plant by H1 2025.
